Tax Year Prior to 2020: Where can I find the AGI on my w-2 form

It is not on your W-2

Your 2017 tax return shows your 2017 Adjusted Gross Income  (AGI)  If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

Form 1040EZ    line 4

Form 1040A       line 21

Form 1040        line 37

If you are using the same TT account that you used last year, you should also be able to find this number in your Tax Timeline for 2017

If entering the amount from your 2017 tax return does not work, then try entering “0” instead.  If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

You can get a free transcript of your past return from the IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Note: If you filed late or amended your return, your correct 2017 AGI may not be in the system.

Note:  If you mail your federal return, you will also need to mail your state return.  You will not be able to e-file your state return.

The AGI is not found on your W-2. That would be found on your 2018 return. You can get that number by logging into your 2018 return and looking on lines 4 if you filed a 1040EZ; line 21 if you filed a 1040A; and line 37 if you filed a 1040.

You can also request a tax transcript to get that amount if you cannot get into your 2018 return. To do so, click here: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Your AGI is not on your Form W-2.  If you are being asked for your AGI to file your 2019 tax return you are being asked for your 2018 AGI  Your 2018 AGI is on your 2018 tax return.

If you need a copy of your 2018 tax return follow these steps.

Sign in to TurboTax making sure you're using the same TurboTax account (with the same username) as in prior years.

  1. Select Documents from the navigation when it appears.

  2. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to choose the tax year you want and then select Download PDF.

This link  How do I access a prior year return? has additional information that you may find useful.

Also, you can request a transcript of your 2018 tax returns from the IRS.  The transcript will have your AGI.

This link to the IRS web site  Welcome to Get Transcript  has directions on how to obtain a transcript of your tax return.

The best and easiest way is to have last year's tax return.

  • Your AGI for 2018 is on line 7 of your Individual Tax Return FORM 1040.
  • If your income was low you can try to enter "0"
  • You can request a transcript Online: IRS Online Transcript
  • You can call the IRS:  1-800-829-1040
  • Contact your Local IRS Office:   Local IRS Offices

Or you can choose not to E-File and Mail your tax return in.

Did you read all the posts above yours?

You need your 2018 AGI to efile 2019. The AGI is on 2018 1040 line 7. If you filed a Joint return you use the same AGI for each spouse.

A W-2 does not have an AGI number.

The 2018 AGI is on the 2018 Federal tax return you filed Form 1040 Line 7

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/01/25947

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on View adjusted gross income (AGI)

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

If your tax return continues to be rejected with the 2018 AGI then enter a 0 (zero) for the AGI and e-file again.

If this is also rejected then you will have to print and mail the tax return.

Can't find it on my w-2

You won't find your AGI on your W-2 or 1099 form because those forms don't take into account over a dozen above-the-line deductions that go into calculating your AGI.

The IRS requires your 2018 AGI to verify your identity for e-filing. If you're paper-filing your return, you won't need your AGI because those are manually processed.

There are a few places you can get your 2018 AGI:

  • If you filed your 2018 taxes with TurboTax, sign in and go down to Your tax returns & documents. Select View adjusted gross income (AGI).
  • If you didn’t file your taxes with TurboTax in 2018, the best place to get last year's AGI is from the 1040 form you filed with the IRS. Look on page 2, line 7. If you filed a 1040NR, it'll be on line 35.
  • If you're having trouble locating your 2018 return, the second-best place to get your AGI is from the IRS. You can order a free transcript of your return at the IRS Get Transcript site or you can purchase a full copy of your 2018 return. Both versions will include your AGI.

If you didn't file a 2018 federal tax return (or you haven't filed one yet), enter 0 as your AGI.

The AGI is not on your W2.  You need your 2019 AGI to efile 2020. The AGI is on 2019 1040 line 8b. If you filed a Joint return you use the same AGI for each spouse.

How to find the AGI.

If you didn't file 2019 or filed it later in the year then try entering 0 for the AGI. If that doesn't work you will have to print and mail your return.

Or request a transcript from the IRS
