self-employment and unemployment wages: Something went wrong error...

I am getting multiple "Something Went Wrong Errors" when trying to input income for unemployment and for self-employment (1099)

Please help correct this issue with TurboTax online. I already cleared out my cache and re-logged into my account.

Please clarify your question.

  • Did you have both self-employment and unemployment income?
  • Self-employment doesn't count for unemployment.  Did you have another job?
  • Did the error include any other statement to describe what was wrong?

Please contact us again with any questions, and provide some additional details.

I have both unemployment and self-employment income. I have an 1099-G and a 1099-NEC forms. When I click yes to all the promts to add under each section your website errors out.

I see others are having the same exact issue and they can't resolve it it either. Please fix your online software. I am ready to not use turbotax for the first time in many years.

One solution may be to remove the 1099-NEC and enter the income directly on your self employment.  Entering this form is not required, it's only to make preparing your return a little easier.

  • To enter this income directly on your self employment activity section of your return Search (upper right) > Type schedule c > Click the Jump to.... link

This may allow you to continue completing your tax return. Be sure to delete your 1099-NEC if you choose to move forward with the instructions above. See the images below.

I have not been able to add any of my 1099's because I get the something went wrong screen before I can iput anything after I click the yes to the following question:

I also tried to manually enter but everything is greyed out for total income.

Also, I do not have that level of search / jump to schedule C with turbo tax online. You are showing turbo tax desktop screenshots...

This is my search option and I can't jump to this / manually enter....

Entering Schedule C in the Search box using the Premium online 2023 edition -

I am using deluxe, not premium.... are you saying I have to upgrade to be able to get the jump to link and be able to manually input 1099's???

There is no jump to schedule C with the search box - only help topics as shown in my prior screenshot...

when will these errors be fixed for the online deluxe version?

Change your web browser to Google Chrome.  You should be able to use the Search function and the Jump to linkage from the Search.

Deluxe online edition -

Or Click on Federal on the left side of the online program screen

Click on Wages & Income

Scroll down to Self-Employment

On Self-employment income and expenses, click on the start button

I am using chrome and I tried other browsers and get the same error.

I have tried clinking start and it is what causes the error page when click continue (per all my screenshots) and all my posts above!

this is beyond infuriating! Please fix the bugs in your software. I see I am not the only one with this problem.

@SaraJeanne08 Clear your tax return and start over.  This is not systemic failure of the software but localized.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2023 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

I have done this before and it doesn’t help. I am not doing it again, as I spent a long time to get to this point. I am not deleting and wasting more hours repeating everything with your online service.

I have tried all the same measures and am getting the same error on self employment. Ive tried multiple browsers, clearing cache and cookies, trying other devices and computers, and starting from scratch multiple times. This is an issue with Intuit's software. I can also get no help from Intuit even when selecting the Deluxe.

You have tried all the things I would suggest and we are not seeing reports of this issue. Please call TurboTax Customer service.  Here is a link:  Turbo Tax Customer Service

My issues never were solved either and as you can see others have the same issue. Admit it and fix the bug in your online software!

I gave up and had to purchase a downloadable / desktop version of a tax prep software .

I spent a couple hours with a CPA and IT support from Turbotax after upgrading to the live full package. They were unable to pinpoint the issue and were as frustrated as I was. They sent me some instructions on defragmenting my hard drive and a couple other extreme troubleshooting steps that would have not solved the issue.

I immediatley found the solution after that. I used Taxslayer instead, and got my taxes done in less than an hour for less. Sorry Turbotax, YOUR software has a bug and you will lose customers until its fixed.

I am having the same issues.  This is obviously a software issue, not localized if so many people are having the same exact problem. I've tried multiple browsers, and devices.

Sorry CatinaT1 this is not the best answer. This is still an ongoing issue with Turbo Tax online and is not resolved as of April, 19 2024. Turbo Tax customer service is a dead end, they take no responsibility for the error and seem to have no ability to report glaring bugs to the software development team.

What problem are you having or what error did you receive?   @Ryan283.   Make sure you are using the right version of TurboTax for the income and deductions you have for your return.   Forms by Product

Hi, I am trying to input only my Unemployment income using 1099-G form sent to me from Maryland Dept. of Labor, Division of Unemployment Insurance.

I signed into my Turbotax account via laptop, cell phone web browser, and Turbotax app (Android) in attempt to bypass the "Something went wrong" error but I continue to get the same error. And I can't input my unemployment income under "Other 1099-G Income".

Try to input this information again using your laptop.  First, clear your cookies and cache. You should also restart your computer.  If you need guidance on clearing the cache, see this article that shows how to do this in different browsers: How to clear your cache

Next, revisit ‌the entry section for 1099-G in TurboTax Online, and I suggest deleting the 1099-G and starting over just to make sure there are no errors.

Here's how:

  • Navigate to Federal; Wages & Income; Unemployment/ paid family leave (1099-G); Choose Add/Edit
  • Verify the answer to Did you receive unemployment or paid family leave benefits? is yes and Where did you get your benefits from? is answered Government
  • Choose the trashcan to Delete if there is anything on the next screen.
  • Select Add 1099-G
  • Choose "Type it in myself"
  • Enter the Payer's federal ID number from the 1099. It could also be called "Payer's TIN", "Payer's federal ID number," or something similar.
  • Continue and fill out the address exactly as it appears on the 1099-G including zip code
  • Now, you will fill in the rest of the 1099-G details. Complete box 1 and 4. For question "Select payer state OR locality", choose only Maryland in Payer State
  • Fill out box 10a, 10b and 11
  • Choose continue and your information should now be included in your tax return.

I am not sure if I am late answering your question but I had the same issue, the only resolution was to clear and start over my tax return. Once I did that, I was able to enter my 1099-G unemployment tax details. Hope this works for you too!

Once you start over fresh/new you will be able to upload the form or enter it manually.

It is Feb 2025 and I'm getting this error as well.  Was there a fix?

As mentioned above, you can try going back to your return, and first clear your cookies and cache.   For more information on how to do this, visit: How to clear your cache.  You could also try opening your return on a different browser.

Once you return to your return, delete the Form 1099-G that is giving you issues. See the steps below:

  1. From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the Pop-Up menu titled “Tools Center,” select Delete a Form
  4. This will show all of the forms in your return
  5. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  6. Select the Form
  7. Click on Delete

Always use extreme caution when deleting information from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

To enter your form again, follow the steps listed on the following TurboTax help article:

Where do I enter a 1099-G for a state or local tax refund?
