Name change

I have legally changed my name but my state and federal return keeps getting rejected because it doesn’t recognize my new name. I do not want to file with my old name because I do not want to have a fraud claim. How do I go about this?

There is a possibility that the IRS has not received the information from the Social Security administration for the change in name for the Social Security number.

If your return continues to rejected for the name and SS number then you will have to print and mail your tax return.

On your tax returns you have to use the name that is on your current Social Security card.

I have received a new social security card with my new name on it. That’s why I do not understand why it is not being recognized or accepted. I have my new name on all of my tax info and drivers license as well

I had changed my name at the start of 2020 so I am unsure why it is still not recognized. I am trying to call the IRS and SS but no avail. Will I be penalized if I efile with my maiden name? My SS number is the same

No, there would be no penalty if you used your maiden name.  However, since you had the name change in 2020 the IRS should have your correct information.
