At this time the program does not have a way to downgrade to a lower TurboTax edition without clearing and starting over. You can remove Deluxe by clearing your return and starting over, as long as you haven't already registered or paid.

Are we able to downgrade now because this is not right,

i will go to another tax website to get my tax return and not recommend this to anyone because of this sneaky feature,

i didnt mean to click the button and now its asking me to pay $80 dollars before checking out....

I did my taxes the first time and was forced to pay the 80$. I tried my hand with credit karma. Turbo tax still gave me a better refund so I came back, cleared my tax info and at the beginning added the deluxe addition because I didnt qualify for the free edition. Now I only have to pay just the $40. Ive always used the free edition without issues. I dont know what made a difference this year.

@xarroyo1 you can downgrade to a different product by using the Clear and Start Over tool. Here's how: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-clear-and-start-over-in-turbotax-online/00/26444

To downgrade the version of the software you are using, you must clear and start over. This will reset the software to your original version. Be sure that the forms you need to complete your return are available in the software version you are using.

  • From the menu on the left, click Tax Tools
  • Choose Clear & Start Over
  • Confirm
  • You may restart your return. Be sure you are using the version of the software that you want before you begin

No. You have to erase and start over. Even though I did this and went through the whole thing again, in the end, it told me I had to get deluxe anyways in order to even file. I was pretty upset. I just went to fileyourtaxes.com and it let me file without paying a single thing. My return was the exact same as TurboTax told me it would be. Filed with TurboTax for the last 4 years, so I'm pretty disappointed with their current service.

Yeah, we know that. The whole issue is that your company doesn't offer a downgrade feature without clearing all data and starting over.

This is absolute evil. You tricked me into upgrading. Said I couldn't continue without upgrading, then immediately told me that I didn't need the upgrade, then immediately told me there was no way to downgrade without starting OVER COMPLETELY. You are bad bad bad bad people. You are evil, I hate you. I'm trapped and want a place to put my rage. Taxes are such a difficult, anxiety-provoking thing, and the last thing I need is for you to be scamming me, and lying to me, and forcing me to choose between paying $50 extra dollars for something I didn't use or spend another 4 hours filling out your web form. You could EASILY allow this, and choose not to so that you can hold my time hostage. I hope something horrible happens to you to make up for this.

In another thread, you said you were in Canada and wondered why you were seeing references to the IRS instead of the CRA.

This is the USA community forum.  If you are not preparing a US tax return, you are at the wrong site.  Here's the Canada community forum:

It is intentional. They don't want to offer you the option that makes them less money. Its a messed up method called "dark pattern".

Why am I taken to the Credit Karma site now?  All I want to do is print my returns!!!  Your program used to be really good--now it sucks!

I submitted my finances federal portion of his return on March 15. I have been receiving repeated text messages about your important update however am still unable to file his NYS return to so "special circumstances" according to your deluxe option we are entitled to online or telephone support which has lead me nowhere, the deluxe service provides the filing of both state and federal filing that he is being charged for. A total of over $200. Dollars and I am unable to file the state, have been hung up on multiple times today by my supposed customer support, been provided with inaccurate information as it was stated to me that my state needs to update their policies. We are New Yorkers, NYS requires efiling however I am being told that their are exceptions considering certain circumstances. I am sorry but Turbo Taxes inability to provide accurate information in regards to the filing of both state and federal taxes for individuals like my fiance who received unemployment yet charged these individuals for services not received is not a special circumstance. In fact it is a misuse of your companies tax prep platform as its apparent that the need to capitalize off of us the American people and utilize a time in which in person tax preparation I am sure is on a decline is disgraceful and shameful. I want all chargers removed from my finances account as you have not providing us with no more then an online version of the paper application in order to file .

I hope I get a call back and not a continued disconnect that I have repeatedly been subjected to today.

Please do not post personal information on this public forum. It has been removed for your protection. We are also not able to contact you from this public forum.

The federal tax return will need to be accepted before you can file a state tax return.

The software has now been updated for NY filers with Unemployment as part of their 1099 income. Please see this: How is my state taxing unemployment income?
