Question

Identity Protection PIN

When the IRS recently opened up applications for an Identity Protection PIN to anyone, regardless of Identity Theft history, my husband and I applied for and received our IP PINS in January, 2021.

The Identity Protection PIN notice that came with our numbers states, "Congratulations, your 2021 Identity Protection PIN is:  XXXXXX."   Hence my confusion:  Are these IP PINs for our 2020 tax return, or for our 2021 tax return?

Thank you, in advance, for your help on this!

The IP PIN you received from the IRS in January of 2021 are to be used on your 2020 tax return.  You will receive a new IP PIN in January of 2022 to be used on your 2021 tax return.

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

    • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
    • Click on Other Tax Situations
    • Scroll down to Other Return Info
    • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

What do you mean by "verify" it?   You didn't provide any context for your question, so we aren't sure what you are wanting to do and why.

Did you have an efile rejection because of an incorrect IP PIN?

Are you required (or opted in) to use a 6-digit Identity Protection PIN when filing your return?

You cannot use the one from last year.    Did you get a new 2021 IP PIN early this year to be used on all returns filed during this calendar year?   If you didn't get your new IP PIN for 2021, here's the IRS site where you can do so:

Only the IRS provides the IP PIN.  They would have sent the IP PIN to you either in December 2021 or January 2022 if you reported an identity theft to the IRS in 2021 or earlier.

Go to this IRS website to retrieve your 6 digit IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin
