I work on a towboat and we are continuously working in different state but I only pay taxes in Ms and IN. I LIVE in MS. Do I put both states   that's on my w-4  or all states I worked in.

When you work in multiple states, you need to check each state's filing requirements.

Because you live in MS, all income goes on the MS with credits from the other states. Do the MS return last.  Please click this link for access to state links.

When you enter your W2, only list the states that are on your W2, IN and MS along with their withholding. You will use the ADD ANOTHER ROW button to enter both states from that W2.

For example:

Please click on the blue words for the steps on how to file a non-resident return.

Yes.  Go to this TurboTax website for prior year (2016 thru 2018) desktop software - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

 I updated to TurboTax Deluxe. You guys charged me $84.10. For the update. It says that I have access to talk to a tax specialist year-round, yet I cannot get one on the phone. What's the secret?

I have tried to explain that my KW-2 on my state return is incorrect. Unfortunately I entered income on both a W-2 and a1099-R. The 1099-R(s) are correct and there are no W-2(s). The tax withholding was entered twice and it therefore gives me a refund which is too high. I just need to delete the W-2 s and have the 1099-R remain. Please help me with this.

I have a Closing Disclosure instead of a HUD-1 Settlement Statement. How do I figure out which fees count as escrow fees and which subcategory each fee should go under?

Closing Statements are now used instead of form HUD-1.

Only some closing costs are deductible.  Most of the closing costs on a home purchase are not.  Instead, they are added to the cost (basis) of the home to reduce any gain when you sell the house down the road.

Examples of closing costs added to the basis of the house are:

  • title fees,
  • real estate commissions,
  • appraisal costs,
  • home inspections,
  • documentary stamps,
  • credit report costs,
  • costs of an abstract,
  • transfer taxes,
  • flood certificate,
  • attorney fees, etc.

Some closing costs that are deductible include:

  • interest paid at the time of purchase (the charge at closing would normally be done for interest up to the date of first payment.);
  • real estate taxes charged to you;
  • points [Sometimes called origination fees and expressed as a percentage of the amount borrowed.)   [On a refinance they need to be amortized over the life of the loan or 84 months, whichever is less, unless the points were used to improve your main home.];  and
  • private mortgage insurance costs but, if prepaid, only the amount attributable to this year based on an 84 month amortization.

All of these items can be entered in the Your Home section on the Deductions & Credits screen.

The state of Georgia states that when a person reaches the age of 63 that they no longer have to pay state taxes.  I have been using Turbo Tax for years and both me and my wife have passed the age of 65; however, Turbo Tax has been assessing us state taxes.  How can that be addressed and corrected.

No, that is not correct.  You still have to pay Georgia state income taxes but only if your income exceeds the Retirement Income Exclusion.

Retirement income and up to $4,000 of earned income is excluded from state taxation when you reach age 62 or older or are disabled.

Age 62 to 64 the exclusion amount is $35,000 per taxpayer.  Age 65 or older the exclusion amount is $65,000 per taxpayer.

I don’t know what’s going on my federal refund

@Dee55

This is normal. It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to update and show the status. The 21 days is just an estimated time frame. The IRS began processing returns on 2/12, you may not find a record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated. Since Turbo Tax will not have the status of your refund, continue checking the Where’s My Federal Refund tool for updates. Updates are made daily, usually overnight.

What does pending mean?

Please use this link to track your refund from the IRS

I file my taxes and always check for errors and it said no errors. I was supposed to get $4,800 federal refund but instead it said $3988 a difference of $840 for a recovery rebate credit. What is this and why didn't turbo pick it up
