Are travel expenses to CME programs (that are required for work and licensure) deductible and if so, where in Turbo Tax do I enter this information?

travel expenses related to required continuing education

  1. You are working on Schedule C.
  2. Next click on “I’ll choose what I work on” (jump to full list)
  3. Scroll down the screen until to come to the section “Business Income and Expense”
  4. Choose “Profit or Loss from Business ” and select start/revisit/update.
  5. If your business is already listed, choose to "edit"
  6.  You will eventually get to a screen titled "Your () Business"
  7. Scroll down to Business Expenses and select "Other Common Business Expenses".

  1. Select "Other Miscellaneous Expenses" and enter here (You can call them "Training and education fees")

Travel for education and employee expenses are not deductible .

person is a schedule C filer using TT self employed I would assume.

There is NO Business tab in the online SE version  .... 

1.    Type “Schedule C” in the Search box.

2.    Select the “Jump to” link.

o    If this is your first time working in this section: You’ll be asked some questions about your self-employment work, and then have a chance to enter your expenses.

o    If  you have already entered some information about your self-employment work:

§  Select Edit next to your business, and confirm your general business info if asked.

§  Select Add expenses for this work OR, if this your first time entering expenses, select Continue on the Let's get the deductions...screen.

§  Follow the screens to enter your expenses.

TurboTax CD/Download Home & Business - Follow these instructions to enter your expenses.

 

Additional Information

Remember to enter 1099-MISC1099-K, cash, and personal check income from your self-employment.

If you’re not self-employed, but a W-2 employee instead, follow these links for the employee home office deduction and job-related employee expenses.
