Why was I charged $25 when the system said $20?

The system said $20, I was up to date on the software, then when I went to pay, the charged me $25. I am going to contest with my credit card as it was changed at the point of sale vs. what it was just before I hit pay.

I see some say there was a promotional $20 cost, but that is not what the screens said right up to the pay point.

You must not have updated your program.  There was a price increase back on March 1.  The early prices expired.  They go up every year.  It is now $25 to efile state in the Desktop program.  What version do you have? And Windows or Mac?

You must be mistaken as it was updated.

This is on windows.

If their early prices expired, they shouldn't have said $20 on the screen right before it came to the last screen.

The discount price of $20 was effective up through 02/28/2021.  The price increased to the standard price of $25 on 03/01/2021.

Software is updated normally on Thursday so if you updated your software on or after 03/04/2021 the $25 e-file charge for a state tax return would be shown in the File section of the program.

I had updated my software multiple times from 3/4 until yesterday, 4/3. You don't have to believe me, but you don't know what you are talking about. The software was up to date, the screens all said $20 up to the point of payment it said $25. I am talking about the screens in filing wizard that said how much I was about to pay.  It doesn't matter what it says in the file menu. What I am talking about were the 2 or 3 screen leading up to the actual pay button.

Troubleshooting update issues on Windows

If your program says it's up to date or you can't update it then do the Manual Update.  This has also fixed the State forms not available problem for some users.

Last night, when I filed, with the most current software, my screen said $20. Not $25 like yours. You don't seem to want to believe me, but that is ok. You are not right.

I had the same issue.  That final screen showed $20 for state e-file (in exactly the same location as that screen capture - the $25 was clearly showing $20).  I have the latest update 3/31/21.  But when it switched to the charge location at intuit.com, the system charged $25.

Prices are listed on the website and state that they are subject to change without notice. If you have any questions or need further help please click here for further assistance.

You don’t seem to understand. I am not talking about the website. I am talking IN THE SOFTWARE. IN THE SOFTWARE, I SAID “FILE WITH STATE”. IT SAID “THAT WILL BE $20”. I SAID “OK”. IT TOOK ME TO THE PAYMENT SCREEN AFTER LOGGING INTO INTUIT AND IT THEN SAY “THAT WILL BE $25”. THIS IS A SCAM.

It is a SCAM for the software, in the software, the screen right before I go to Intuit to pay to say $20, then when I go to pay it is $25. Period. You don't understand.

I had the same issue tonight, 5/15/21.  Every time I open TurboTax it will do an update if it has been more than a day or so.  And I just bought the State of Michigan two days ago!  So why the the screen just before purchase check-out tell me it was going to be $20 per state return to efile!!!  That's bull...

I was also charged $25 after seeing 20 where it says to file together . I just read the fine print on my pkg it said for early file then in march it goes to $25 .

Okay, here we are one year later, and exactly the same thing is happening. Updated software (Fed & State) an hour ago. Payment page says cost to eFile State will be $20, but after entering credit card info, the payment jumps to $25.

@PeteDun The state e-file charge was $20 prior to March 1.  On March 1 the price increased to $25.  If you updated your software on or after March 1 the program screen would have shown the $25 price for e-filing a state tax return.

Also, this fee can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax return.

@DoninGA: Please re-read my post. I updated the software today, shortly before filing. I shared screen shots showing the cost as $20, then $25. The fact that not e-Filing is free is irrelevant.

Maybe the update didn't install completely.  Try updating again and reboot your computer.  Looks like you are on Mac?

Thanks, but I did that already. I just got off the phone with a Ttax support rep who had the same experience. Her response: "That ain't right. That's bait and switch!" She referred the issue to billing, who she said would issue a refund within 48 hours. We'll see.

This is incredibly annoying.  I had the same problem.  I update the software everytime I log into it.  The screen said $20 for state e-file, but when I tried to pay by computer OR by phone, I was charged $25.  THIS IS A SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICE.  The customer service agent was extremely nice but could not change the fee.

I have updated my software everytime I've logged in.  The price on the state e-file page is $20.  If the price stated is $20, the credit card charge should be $25.  Nowhere on the price page does it say that the price might be incorrect.  I am complaining to BBB.  Intuit is taking advantage of its customers.

Which state did you file your return for? @andriadel13

Mine was Wisconsin. Too bad it was the same bug for people this year as last year.  A scam last year and a scam this year. Huh, not one Intuit is rushing to fix.
