Can't E-File my NY state returns. Is it because i am early and NY hasnt finalized forms?

I have a very simple tax return I have not moved I have filled everything out the exact same as I did the last 10 years and they are telling me I have to file by mail is it because of the forms not being ready yet and I am super early?

Probably.  State Forms Availability for individual tax returns

Or did you already file federal?  You can't efile state until federal has been accepted.

Did you already efile the Federal return previously by itself?    If you efiled the Federal already and are now trying to efile the state return, it won't let you until the Federal return is accepted.    The IRS begins processing Federal returns on February 12, except for a small number they pull early for testing purposes.

Most NY forms are ready except for a very few.  See the tables below.

Log into your online account and be sure that the Tax Home confirms the Federal return is showing as accepted.   If your Federal return was just accepted today, it might take TurboTax a little time to catch up.

If the Tax Home says the Federal is accepted, then open your return and go through REVIEW tab to be sure all is in order.

Then go back to the FILE section and change your filing method for the state return from mail to efile, and then try to proceed to efile the state return.

If it won't let you, then what and where is the roadblock?   Any error message?

There are a few less-common NY state forms that aren't supported.  But that would affect relatively few people.  You can still check the state forms list for your state at:

Thanks for the info. Nope! No errors in sight! I filled out the form the exact same way I have for years. It says that I have a tax situation and doesn't give me any reasoning at all and when I go to change from mail to e-file that's what the reason is it says I have a tax situation that can't be e-filed but makes no sense I have no changes at all not in my income not in my residency nothing like I said I filled the form out the same for years

I'll see if a couple of other users have any suggestions, but it likely won't be tonight.

@VolvoGirlor @DoninGA   Do you have any additional suggestion why this user cannot efile NY state return?   Federal return has been accepted.

I’m in the same boat as you. My federal was accepted and it’s still asking to mail in state. I have never done that before and my taxes are the same every year. I don’t know if I did I something wrong on my federal Because it says on my state that I have no refund due and no balance due but I owe estimated tax for 2021? I’ve never had that before. I thought maybe because I filed to early and federal didn’t transfer over to state yet but it’s still saying to mail it in and still showing these estimates taxes. I’m lost on this one.

honestly I think you're Federal is fine I think they're seriously an issue here because I've been following all the correct steps everything is filled out the same every year for me and I'm still getting the message saying I can't e-file

I’m wondering if it has something to do with the fact that we can’t file our state taxes yet? Im just so confused.

Yes, many of the NY tax forms are still not available for e-file.  To check forms availability, click here: NY state forms ( unsupported)  You might just print them out and paper file.

Generally, you must file a New York State income tax return if you're a New York State resident and are required to file a federal return. You may also have to file a New York State return if you're a nonresident of New York and you have income from New York State sources.  For more information, click here: New York filing requirements
