I read we can now claim charitable contributions even if we do not itemize.  Is this accurate and are there any limitations?

No, not for tax year 2025.  Charitable donations are entered as itemized deductions only.

For tax year 2026, that is filed in 2027, a charitable donation can be made even if you do not itemize.

The "non-itemized" deduction for charity begins with your 2026 tax return----next year--- not for your 2025 tax return.   For 2026 you can get a deduction for $1000 if filing single or $2000 on a joint return even if you use standard deduction.

For tax year 2025, you must still itemize in order to claim charitable contributions on your tax return.

For tax year 2026, the ability to claim charitable contributions without itemizing will take effect.  Here are some highlights for this new provision:

  • The deduction will be up to $1000 ($2000 if married filing jointly)
  • Deductions must be made in cash
  • The donation must be made to qualified public charities - use this link to determine if the charity qualifies:  IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search
