How do I get my 6-digit IP PIN?
by TurboTax•551• Updated 3 weeks ago
The IRS typically issues an IP PIN in known cases of identity fraud, but it’s still possible to opt into the IP PIN program even if you’re not a victim.
However, the IRS may not always be proactive when issuing IP PINs. If your Social Security number was exposed as part of a security breach, but the IRS hasn’t sent you a letter to notify you to request an IP PIN, you should acquire an IP PIN as soon as possible.
An IP PIN and a Self-Select PIN are two different things.
- An IP PIN is a 6-digit number that the IRS gives taxpayers who were victims of tax-related identity theft.
- A Self-Select PIN is a random 5-digit number that you enter as your electronic signature when e-filing your return.
If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:
- Get your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site, or
- Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)
We can't issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.
Once you have the PIN
- On the Did you or your spouse get an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes? screen, select Yes.
- On the Review your Identity Protection PIN info screen, select the pen icon (Edit) next to the spouse's name.
- On the Tell us spouse's Identity Protection PIN screen, enter or correct the IP PIN and select Continue.
- On the Review your Identity Protection PIN info screen, select Done.
- Select File in the menu.
- On the Welcome back screen, select Continue.
- Don't select Fix my return.
- Select Start next to Step 3 to refile your return.
