TurboTax locked incorrect SIN on spouse return – cannot file or edit (Case #1772 7 95 96 2537)

Hi,

I am currently dealing with an issue in TurboTax where my spouse’s SIN became locked incorrectly in the return. Because of this, the return cannot be filed and I am unable to correct the SIN.

I already contacted TurboTax support and this issue is associated with case #1772 7 95 96 2537.

The suggested workaround from support was to delete the spouse’s return, create a new return, re-add Expert Assist, and then request a “one-time courtesy refund”.

To be honest, the wording around a “courtesy refund” was quite frustrating to hear. This issue was not caused by me — it appears to be a system limitation or error within TurboTax. Framing the refund as a courtesy makes it sound like the customer did something wrong, which is not the case here.

What I am asking for is straightforward:

  1. Allow the SIN to be corrected so the return can be properly filed to CRA, or

  2. Issue a refund for the return that cannot be filed due to this system issue.

I would really appreciate it if a TurboTax moderator could review case #[phone number removed]7 and help resolve this.

Has anyone else experienced a locked SIN issue like this in TurboTax?

Thank you.

If you have certified the return after a review and are attempting to change the SIN, you will be unable to do so because the return has been certified, indicating that the information is correct.

You would need to make a copy and then edit the SIN for your spouse's return, but it will require you to pay a fee for this. Please contact product support so they can look into it and assist you.

Let me know how it goes!

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

@Imdan23 If you certified your return after reviewing it, you will be unable to change your SIN. You can make a copy of your return and change the SIN, but you will need to pay again. To resolve the payment issue, please contact our Product Support team.
