This is the standard way to ensure all background calculations (like the credit vs. deduction choice) are handled correctly. This includes entering the carryovers.

  1. Go to Federal > Deductions & Credits.
  2. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid and click Start or Revisit next to Foreign Taxes.
  3. Answer Yes to "Did you pay any foreign taxes?" (Even if you didn't pay any this year, saying yes allows you to enter the carryover).
  4. When asked "Do you want the deduction or the credit?", select Take a Credit.
  5. Continue through the screens. You will eventually reach a screen titled "Do you have any Foreign Tax Credit Carryovers?"
  6. Select Yes. You will see a grid for years (e.g., 2016–2025).
  • Foreign Taxes: Enter the total foreign tax paid in that prior year.
  • Amount Used: Enter how much of that tax was already used in previous years.
  • The difference between these two columns is your carryover.

2. The "Force Form" Method (If you have $0 foreign income)

If you have absolutely no foreign income this year, the software might try to skip the form entirely. To force it:

In the Foreign Tax interview, add a "dummy" country (select RIC or Various).

  1. Leave the income and taxes as $0.
  2. Continue until you hit the Carryovers screen mentioned above.
  3. This forces TurboTax to recognize you are a "Form 1116 Filer," which is required to generate Schedule B.

3. The "Forms Mode" Path (Desktop Version Only)

  1. If you are using the downloaded software, you can jump straight to the math:
  2. Click the Forms icon (top right).
  3. In the left-hand list, look for Form 1116. If it’s not there, click Open Form and search for it.
  4. Select Form 1116 Schedule B.
  5. Enter your carryover data directly into the columns.

Important: Also check the Foreign Tax Credit Comp Wks (Computation Worksheet). Line 10 of that worksheet is where the carryover from Schedule B pulls into the actual tax calculation.

4. Why it might still not be printing:

If you have completed the steps above and it still won't print:

  1. The "Print Selection": When you go to print, ensure you select "All forms and worksheets" or "Forms filed with the government." If you only select "Just my tax return," TurboTax often omits "informational" schedules like Schedule B unless they change your tax liability for the current year.
  2. AMT Version: If you have an AMT liability, check for Form 1116 AMT Schedule B. You may need to enter the carryover twice (once for Regular tax and once for AMT).

Thanks !

I'm using The online version.

I actually have a foreign income , but the foreign tax is under $600. Meaning that From 1116 is not necessary , but still need Schedule B (otherwise all the carryovers will be lost!).

If I enter a higher amount (bringing the taxes over 600$), the form 1116 and the schedule B can be printed and filed.

Therefore it is a system glitch!!!!

that can lead to losing $ in carryovers.

Thanks so much!

If you only have a carryover, the Form 1116 is not required and the IRS system holds it until your next Form 1116 is filed. You can force the 1116. If you want to force file the 1116 using the desktop version:

  1. Open to Forms mode
  2. Locate Info Wks on the left side
  3. Scroll down to part VI
  4. Check the box to force file 1116
