If you are claiming the student as your dependent, be sure to enter the dependent's information in the personal "My Info" section first, before you enter the 1098-T.

When you enter the 1098-T, TurboTax will ask who the student is, be sure to pick the proper dependent.

If the student is not you or your dependent, you don't claim the 1098-T.

I found out that I had to purchase the deluxe to get the correct student

Yes, Education credits are not supported in TurboTax Free.
