Both my husband and I are students who should qualify for the American Opportunity Credit (AOC). Because we filed jointly, the AOC was only applied once. Should we file separately to both receive the credit?
Definitely not. You can't get the credit at all if your return is Married Filing Separately.
If you both qualify, you both get it. You go through the Education section twice, as eligibility is determined independently of your spouse's eligibility.
- Did you go through the education selection twice, selecting each of you?
- Who of the two is not getting it?
- How much is your credit, and where are you looking?
Please review your education entries and report back with more detailed information.
