Improvements to your own home are not deductible.    Keep a record of the expense for someday when you sell the home.

Yes.  This would not be deductible for any credit. However, if you sell your home this would be added to the cost basis of your home for when you sell your home.  This will lower the profit on your home. Be sure to keep receipts from the installation of the siding.

If the siding was added to a rental property then you would add it as a depreciable asset under assets in the rental section.

What if the siding was installed on the home used as a home office. Does it qualify to be depreciated ?

If so, over what time period ?

Yes. You can depreciate the business percentage if you are using actual home office expenses instead of the standard. An office is not a residence so it is depreciated over 39 years.

For example:

  • Your office is a 10 x 15 room = 150 sq ft
  • Your house is 1500 sq ft.
  • Your office is 10% of the house and 10% of the siding can be depreciated using actual expenses.
