If you need to manually review or override the choice, use the steps below.

How to Check or Switch Your Deduction

Navigate to the Deductions & Credits summary screen in your tax return.

Let TurboTax finish running its automatic calculation comparing your total itemized expenses (like mortgage interest, charitable donations, and medical bills) against the standard deduction.

If your itemized total is higher—or if you prefer to force itemizing—follow the on-screen prompts to review your choices; TurboTax will guide you to switch as long as you are using TurboTax Deluxe or a higher tier, which is required to handle itemized deductions.

Note that if you are married filing separately, both you and your spouse must use the same deduction method (either both standard or both itemized)
