If you used TurboTax last year, your CA income tax information will automatically transfer and populate Schedule A. This includes state withholding from your W-2s and 1099s. However, be sure to manually enter any estimated tax payments you made to CA FTB during 2025, since these may not automatically be captured.

On Line 5e, your total state and local taxes (SALT) are added up. The SALT deduction cap has changed for 2025. The previous limit of $10,000 has been increased to $40,000, with a phase-out starting when your AGI is over $500,000.

Also keep in mind that the standard deduction has increased to $15,750 for single and $31,500 for married filing jointly, so make sure total itemized deductions exceeds these amounts to lower your tax bill.

TurboTax will automatically calculate both scenarios and select the one that saves you the most money.
