1099-Misc Business vs Communting miles

Good Evening,

I received a 1099-Miss form from the custom event center where I bartend events.  My name is the business name and my physical address is the business address in my turbo tax business profile.  When I work an event I travel from my home aka home office directly to my clients for work and then back to my home/home office when finished working.  It is approximately 70 miles round trip.   Would these miles be considered commuting or business mileage?   I'm confused because I have seen different answers from different tax experts, and don't want to make a mistake on my taxes and cause a red flag.  Can i deduct these miles for business?   Also, if  I have to go to the event center (worksite) for business errands such as for a meeting with the client, or to pick up my paycheck would these miles be considered commuting or business mileage?

Thank you in advance!

Here is a good answer to your question from user IreneS (difference between business miles and commuting miles😞

Generally, commuting is travel between your home and a work location. Commuting miles are a personal expense and are not deductible.

Business miles are incurred when you go from one workplace to another workplace and are a deductible expense.

As an example:

  • In a typical work day as a sales rep, you go from your home to your office.  - These are commuting miles.
  • From your office, you travel to Client A, then to Client B, etc.  All of this mileage is considered business miles.
  • From your last client you go home.  This, again, is commuting mileage and not deductible.

If you are self-employed and your office is located in your home, you can deduct miles you travel to meet with business clients or perform other business-related functions.
If your office is located away from your home, you cannot deduct miles you travel to go to your office.

Thank you.  I'm self-employed and my office is located in my home.  I will deduct the miles I travel to meet with business clients or perform other business-related functions.

Thanks again for replying.

I have a follow up question.  I work FOR a catering company as a 1099 employee (i.e. I do not own the company and my home is not an office in any way).  In a typical day I would travel from my house to an event, travel from the event to the “office” of the catering company (a kitchen where I would drop off chafer dishes and other items used for the event), then I would travel home.  Given that the first leg of my traveling is to a temporary work location (because events are held in countless locations) and NOT a regular work location, is the mileage from this leg tax deductible?  Are any of the other legs tax deductible?

Thank you:)
