How get your 1st and 2nd stimulus check

The only way to get the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus check is to file a 2020 tax return and use the recovery rebate credit in the Federal Review section to get it.   If you filed a 2020 return and did not complete that section then you can amend your 2020 return.

If you still need to file a 2020 return:

Online preparation and e-filing for 2018 and 2019 and 2020 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you did not receive your first or second stimulus checks, you will need to either file or amend (if you already filed) a 2020 tax return.   If you qualify for the payments, the only way to get those now is to claim the Recovery Rebate on your 2020 tax return.

The current tax return, 2021, will only provide the Recovery Rebate for the 3rd stimulus payment.

How do I get my first and second stimulus check

Expert Alumni
Apr 9, 2022 3:51:37 PM

IRS stopped sending out first, second and third stimulus checks a long time ago.

As Tax Expert @DawnC and Tax Champ @xmasbaby0 said, the only way to get stimulus money now is to file tax returns.

Any missing first and second stimulus will be added to the refund on your 2020 tax return. The third stimulus will be added to your 2021 tax return.

You can’t prepare 2020 online and you’ll have to mail it to the IRS. Send your return by certified mail with return receipt so you have proof of filing.

Go to File your 2020 taxes to get the software.

You have to file a 2020 tax return to claim the 1st & 2nd Stimulus payments.   Or if you filed you need to amend 2020 if the Recovery Rebate Credit didn't show up on line 30.

STIMULUS PAYMENTS

EIP1 The first Stimulus payment was 1,200 for each spouse and 500 for each dependent under 17.  Came out in spring of 2020.

EIP2 The second Stimulus was 600 per person and dependents under 17. The 2nd stimulus checks started going out at the very end of December 2020 and continued into January/Feb 2021.

The first 2 Stimulus payments went on your 2020 return even if you got the second one in Jan/Feb 2021.

EIP3 The 3rd Stimulus payment started going out in March 2021 and is for 1,400 for each person listed on your tax return, no age limit. The IRS used your 2020 (or 2019) return to send the checks out fast. If your 2021 return changes and you qualify for more you can claim the extra as the Recovery Rebate Credit on 1040 line 30. But line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more. Not the amount you already got. The IRS also sent out letter 6475 to tell you how much they sent you . If you are married then each spouse should get a letter for half.

If you didn't get the 1st or 2nd Stimulus payments you have to file a 2020 return or amend it if it wasn't added on 1040 line 30.

To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here,

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Were you a dependent in 2020?  If so, you do not qualify for stimulus payments for that year.

@Eddieluck7

The first EIP --or stimulus check--- was issued in 2020  It was for $1200 for adults and $500 for a dependent under the age of 17.   The IRS used information from either your 2019 or 2020 tax return to issue those checks so they could send them out in a hurry.

The 2nd EIP or stimulus was issued in late 2020 or early 2021 and was $600 for adults and $600 for dependents under age 17.

If you did not receive the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus check you can get it by filing a 2020 tax return and using the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review.   It will end up on line 30 of a 2020 tax return and will be added to your refund (or reduce your tax due).

The 3rd EIP--or stimulus check-- was sent out in mid-March or later in 2021 and was for $1400 per person--adults and dependents no age limit.

If you did not get the 3rd EIP payment you can get it by filing a 2021 tax return and using the recovery rebate credit in Federal Review.   The credit will go on line 30 of your Form 1040 and will add to your refund (or reduce your tax due).

If you are asking about the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus check you have to file a 2020 return.

@Jasonblackmo The way to get the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus is to file a 2020 tax return.   If you are eligible for the stimulus checks then the amount will show up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.

@Jasonblackmo There is a reply directly above your own post that tells you what you need to do in order to get the first and/or second stimulus check.   The only way to get those EIP payments is to file a 2020 tax return and use the recovery rebate credit in the federal review section to get them.   The amount of the credit will show up on line 30 of your 2020 Form 1040.   You have to mail the Form 1040, and then wait six to nine months for the IRS to process the return.
