TurboTax never files your tax return. YOU file it by gong through the FILE section and clicking a big orange button that says "Transmit my returns now" OR you file it by printing, signing, and mailing it. TurboTax cannot do either of those things for you.
And--if you e-file you have to pay attention to the emails they send you after that which tell you if the return was accepted or rejected. If the IRS rejected it, you have to follow up and fix it to re-file, or mail it.
I went through the whole thing only to be stopped because I couldn't pay state all at once. Sorry, I didn't mean TurboTax didn't file them for me, just didn't let me finish and file.

What all did you do? Did you file anything at all? i.e., did you successfully efile the Federal return by itself, but didn't efile the state return because you had state taxes due that you couldn't pay? Or did you not file anything?
If you filed the Federal previously by itself, are you wanting to now efile the state return without paying the state tax due and choose to pay the state taxes due later? If so, we may be able to tell you how to do that. TurboTax cannot force you to pay the state tax due at the time of filing.
Do you intend to pay later by check, or pay electronically at the state website (if your state allows), or do you intend to set up an installment plan with your state (if it has such a plan)?
I filled everything out and went to finish and file, set up payment stuff for federal, then it wouldn't go passed state unless I payed all up front. I wanted to set up an installment with both, but it wouldn't let me with state. It didn't finish either.

Sorry, I'm a fellow user, and I don't know anything about state installment plans. Did the TurboTax program offer such? They may have to be set up separately with the state; I don't know.
I don't know if you want to file both returns and pay the state taxes later (likely late with penalty) or if you want a product refund like you originally asked. To file a state return without paying the state taxes due, you would indicate that you intend to pay the state taxes by "check." That at least lets you get past that section and continue on to efile. Then you can later pay by a different method of your choice outside of TurboTax or check with the state about installment plans. With that approach, you'd likely receive a late payment penalty, but not a late filing penalty if efiled/postmarked today. Otherwise, if not timely filed, there can be late filing penalties and late payment penalties. Some states also allow one to pay taxes electronically at their websites.

Did you efile my 2020 tax return? IRS says they don't have any info about my return.
@33612 The IRS refund site is no longer showing information for 2020 refunds. The system has switched over to only show information for 2021 refunds. So it will say there is "no information" if you are looking for 2020. And TurboTax does not not file your return. YOU have to file it yourself by clicking a big orange button that says "Transmit my returns." if you did not do that then you did not file. Look in your account----does it say "accepted" for your 2020 return? If it says anything else, like "printed" or "ready to mail" or "rejected" then your return was not filed. In that case you have to print it, sign and mail it now. it cannot be e-filed.
If it says accepted, then sadly your 2020 return is still among the millions of 2020 returns that are caught up in the backlog at the IRS. TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your return.

@jlcoffinberger1 You might be looking in the wrong account if you are seeing in TT that the return was not filed. If you know that the return was e-filed and accepted---and you received an email saying it was accepted, then you can track your refund on the IRS site.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

It's common to end up with multiple accounts. First LOG OUT of whatever TurboTax account you're logged into right now. Then use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used

I paid you nearly 200 dollars on April 15th 2022, to electronically file my taxes!! Why has this not been accomplished?? This is my 3rd attempt to get this resolved with TurbTax!
@BennysGrampy Paying your fees did not file your tax return. Did you go all the way through the FILE section and e-file the return? If you did not do that then the return was not filed. And...it is now too late to e-file. E-filing is closed and now a 2021 return can only be filed by mail.

BS I was told on a phone call that I should find emails to verify what I was told to do! But was unable to locate those emails! If Turbo tax doesn't do that then they need to return the money that was taken from my checking account.
@BennysGrampy You can have a discussion with customer support about that if you want to. But even if you did not e-file, the fee is the same whether you e-file or send the return by mail in an envelope. The fee was for using the software; you did not pay an extra fee to e-file. They do not refund your fee just because you could not or did not e-file successfully.
If your account does not show that your return was filed and accepted, then at this time the only thing you can do is print it, sign and date it in ink, and mail it in to the IRS.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue. If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help. Do not use the word “refund.”

Turbotax wants you to pay for e-file first before continuing to transmit the returns. I paid for e-file state but turbotax didn't transmitted it because the income on the state return was not the same as on the federal. I had to override the income box on the state return . So, I had to mail the state return and e file the federal return. The same thing happened last year too. But Turbotax never refunded my money paid for e-file state.
