Where can I find my IRS confirmation number?

I'm not sure exactly what it is that you want.  Please define what you mean by the term.

The IRS stopped using a declaration control number (DCN) for efiled returns several years ago.   Is someone like a mortgage loan company asking you for something?

Or are you referring to a payment confirmation number such as when paying taxes at EFTPS or IRS Direct Pay?

Or are you referring to a page called "Electronic Postmark" that TurboTax provides after efiling?   It shows efile dates.

There is no such IRS confirmation number.  The IRS does not send you any type of confirmation number when using tax preparation software to e-file your tax return.  When the IRS either accepts or rejects your e-filed tax return you will receive an email from TurboTax for the acceptance or the rejection.

When you download the PDF or your tax return after it has been accepted, there will be a Postmark Report which will have the date/time the tax return was transmitted and the date it was accepted by the IRS.

In years past, a confirmation from turbo that IRS received and accepted return was received very soon after filing.

If you went through the entire return and got a message that your return was successfully filed, you should not have to do anything else. Most returns are being accepted within 24-48 hours, however, some may take longer. Unfortunately, TurboTax has no control over how long the IRS takes to accept the returns once they are transmitted. To check the e-file status of your return, please click here for instructions.

@usernameishere The confirmation number you would enter here is the number you received after making a payment through IRS Direct Pay.  If you didn't save your confirmation number,  you will need to contact the IRS for further assistance.  Go here for steps to reach a live IRS agent when you call.

TurboTax offered to set up Direct Pay for me. Why didn't they provide a confirmation number then? I WOULD'VE DONE THIS THROUGH THE IRS PORTAL IF I KNEW I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TRACK IT THROUGH TURBOTAX!

You must have misunderstood something.  TurboTax in no way can access the IRS payment portal and Direct Pay on your behalf.

You may be thinking of the option to pay the federal taxes owed by direct debit from your bank account where you are asked to enter your bank routing and account numbers in the program for Direct Debit.  That information is sent with your e-filed federal tax return and the IRS debits your account.

Ok ... now we are getting to the meat of the issue ... TT makes no payments and thus gives no confirmation codes out.

What happens is the payment request is sent to the fed/state with your return and they are the ones to initiate the payment.  Your only confirmation of said payment is on your bank/CC statement.  If you set up a payment for 7/15 then it could take several days for the payment to be completed as it does every year at the deadline as they are inundated with requests.

How you chose to pay the taxes owed will be on the Filing Instructions page included with your tax return.

Sign onto your TurboTax online account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down and click on Add a State.  This will take you back to the 2019 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.

I didn't get one either when doing my taxes back in February. In order to qualify for my mortgage I had to show I paid my tax bill for 2020. I had scheduled it for April 15th through TurboTax. A call to both CS and IRS would not allow me to make any changes to the pending payment so I chose to pay it today through ACH on the Direct Pay site so I could move forward with the lender. However the pending payment is still there. I can see it from my IRS account. But without a confirmation number I can't cancel or make changes to it. The pending payment for April 15th is now not necessary as I paid my owed taxes in full today so I could show this to the lender. Any suggestions... other than get in my car and explain my plight to a live agent? Thank you.

NOTE:  If you've already tried this method, and if it was this method that asked you for a confirmation number, then this information is likely redundant and won't be helpful.   But since I don't know exactly what you did, I'll provide the info below from the IRS website.

I'm a fellow user, not a tax person, and don't work for TurboTax.  But I may be able to provide some information.  What department did you speak to at the IRS?   There is a special department and special phone number at IRS efile Payment Services where one can supposedly cancel a scheduled electronic payment that was submitted in an efile.   Go to the following IRS website, where you can see the full article:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

Scroll down that page a bit.  The information for cancelling a scheduled electronic funds withdrawal from an efiled return is in the section with the heading "Cancellations, Errors, and Questions" where you'll see the department and phone number.

If you are able to cancel it at IRS efile Payment Services, see if they can give you some confirmation number of the cancellation for your records.   Also check your IRS Account at some point later to be sure the pending payment is no longer showing.   While you have them on the phone, ask them about how long it takes before you can see the scheduled payment removed from your IRS Account..

Thank you. IRS wasn't too helpful on the phone. I made a payment yesterday with my savings account and apparently it isn't set up for ACH transfers. So I paid with my checking account today. The payment scheduled for the 15th will fail as it is through my savings account as well. Turbotax should either provide an IRS confirmation number or not allow scheduled payments.

So you tried that special phone number at IRS efile Payment Services, and it was that department that asked you for a confirmation number?   Sorry, but I didn't know that department would ask for it since that page doesn't mention one.

Did you also tell your bank about the problem in case they can put some kind of block/stop on it?

Otherwise, as a fellow user, I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestion.

Perhaps there will be another method for cancelling it come to light at some point according to the FAQ that @CarissaM provided in her comment above.

In past I thought I received a e-mail from Turbo Tax that my Federal Tax Return had been accepted.  Is this message no longer issued?

It is ... did you check the spam folder ?   Did you block email from Intuit or Turbotax?   Do they have the correct email for you ?

Log in and check the status and then verify your contact info while you are there ...

If you have e-filed using TurboTax Online, you can check e-file status here https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If you are using TurboTax desktop product, open the software, click File tab in the very top of computer screen and scroll down to Check E-Filing Status.

How can I prove I e-filed my return (what is an "electronic postmark")?

As long as you transmitted your return before 11:59 PM on the day taxes were due, your return is considered timely filed even if it doesn't get accepted until after the deadline.

You can show you e-filed before the deadline using an Electronic Postmark, which is a time stamp that shows when your return was transmitted. You can find it in TurboTax. See below for instructions on how to find it for your current or prior year return.

(If you're concerned because you haven't yet received your refund, there are many reasons why a refund may be delayed, even if you filed on time.)

Current tax year

TurboTax Online and mobile app

Simply check your e-file status online (you’ll need your Social Security number and zip code) to retrieve your filing status history. You can then capture a screenshot or print it out from your web browser.

If the link above doesn't work, follow these steps:

  1. Open your return.
  2. On the first screen (it will say "Take me to my return"), scroll down and select Your tax returns and documents.
  3. Select the current year.
  4. Select View efile details.
  5. You can then capture a screenshot or print it out from your web browser.

TurboTax CD/Download software

  1. First, open your return.
  2. Then, from File menu in TurboTax, select Check E-file Status.
  3. Select Print.

Prior tax year

For returns before the current year that you e-filed with TurboTax:

  1. Open your return.
  2. On the first screen (it will say "Take me to my return"), scroll down and select Your tax returns and documents.
  3. Select the year you e-filed.
  4. Select View efile details.
  5. You can then capture a screenshot or print it out from your web browser.
