Turbotax messed up my state taxes. How can I amend my state tax return and get the final number correct?

Turbotax messed up. It stated my Indiana part year income was larger than my full year income. All checks passed. Told me I owed some money. Now I am trying to amend it. But it adds the money I paid top the total I am due. But the mount I paid wa never taken from my bank.

I filed our taxes jointly, but my husband Federal &State taxed were rejected.  I need help to find out how to correct them.

Please explain how you filed  JOINT return but your spouse's return was rejected.   When you file a  joint return that means you file ONE tax return with ALL of the income for both spouses on the same Form 1040.  What exactly did you do?

Was your return Accepted?  Did his return reject because you filed a Joint return for yourself?  Did you enter his income into the Joint return you filed?  If not you need to amend your return and add all his info to it.  Or if you each want to file your own returns you each file as Married Filing Separate.  But it is too late to change a Joint return to a MFS return.

I don't know why they were rejected?

You still have not explained what you did.  If you filed a joint return there is no return for your husband.  His income should have been on the same tax return you entered your own income onto.  What did you do?  Why do you say your "husband's" return was rejected?

@Gladestone66 Please look at the actual Form 1040's that you filed--or tried to file.  Whose names are on the returns?  What filing status is checked ---it will be up near the top of page 1.

How did you get "joint return" out of this question. It has nothing to do with a joint return. My wife has been deceased for almost 2 years.

Turbotax transferred information to my IN part year state taxes incorrectly. It is a problem with their software.

I just discovered this Sunday, December 6th. There are also some other issues.

This is not a joint return. My wife has been deceased for almost 2 years.

I filed as a single taxpayer.

Turbotax incorrectly transferred my part year income to the IN part year tax form. It was showing more than my AGI on my Federal tax return.

This community forum thing leaves a lot to be desired. Why am I receiving replies that have nothing to do with my question? This is almost as good as Turbotax's total lack of support! They will not accept the e-mail address on my account and refuse to let me talk to anyone.

That is because other users can tag onto a message that has nothing to do with the original post.  Unfortunately it is the same as any other social media website.

@patdlangley Anyone can post to a thread in the forum.  Another user posted to the thread you started and that user's issue had to do with a joint return.  We were trying to help that user with that issue.  No one said you had a joint return.  You mistook that reply to another user as if it was for you.  When you have posted in a thread you get copied on  the activity within the thread.  It will not always be for you personally.  If you actually return to the thread and read through it --- it will make more sense to you.

As I stated before I don't know what went wrong.  My return was accepted, but my husband was rejected.

I'm asking for help which you said would be offered.  I need someone to check my returns to see what is wrong so I can correct them.    I can't find a reason they were returned.  This was supposed to be an easy turbotax return.

Know your disclaimer is wrong everything has not been checked by you to get this corrected!

Both our names are on the return.

The disclaimer is only for the person posting the answer, not that your return is correct.  We are just other users here like you.  We don't work for Turbo Tax.

We don't understand how you filed.  Did you try to file a separate tax return for your husband?  If you filed a Joint return you do not file a return for him.  He should be included on the Joint return.

@Gladestone66 It sounds like you made a big error when you filed.  If you thought you were filing a joint tax return, you did it wrong.  You were supposed to enter all of your own income and all of your husband's income on the

same

tax return.  There should not have been two tax returns.  Only ONE.  So you messed up.   TurboTax would have no way to know that you were making that mistake since it is possible to file a joint return even if one of the spouses had no income.

The way to fix it is to amend your own return and add your husband's income to the return that only had your own income on it.  And PLEASE--as advised earlier-- look at the filing status you used when you filed your tax return.  See if the box is checked for "Married Filing Jointly". It is up at the top of your Form 1040.   If you did not set it up as a joint return:

Go to My Info and when you come to the question that asks if you were married--say YES.  The next question will ask if you want to file together with your spouse.  Say YES.  Then you will be working on a joint return.   You will be prompted to add your husband's personal information including his Social Security number.  When you get all of that taken care of, go to the income section.

If your husband has a W-2, go to Federal>Wages & Income, and click to add a W-2.  The screen will show both of your names.  Click your husband's name and add his W-2.  If he has more than one W-2, click Add W-2 and enter all of his W-2's under his name.  If he had any other sort of income you have to enter that too--always under his name--but all on the same tax return form.  If you need help finding an income section we can help.

@Gladestone66

AMENDING YOUR TAX RETURN

What does it mean to "amend" a return?

·         Do I Need to Amend my Tax Return?

·         Will amending delay my original tax refund?

·         What is the deadline for filing an amended return?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-to-amend-change-or-correct-a-return-you-already-filed/00/25588

Be aware that it is taking the IRS about six months to process an amended return, so do not expect quick results or a quick refund.  If you are getting any additional tax refund from the amended return, the IRS only mails a check to the address on your tax return--they will not do a direct deposit for the refund.

Make sure you use a mailing service like certified mail to send the amended return so that you will know the IRS received it, or you will be wondering for weeks or even months if they have it.  When they eventually open the envelope with your amended return you will be able to see its status on this site:

@Gladestone66 So that you will understand----NO ONE can see your screen, your tax return or your account.  We cannot "check" your tax return for you.  This is do-it-yourself tax software -- and you can make user errors that are impossible for the software to detect.  No one else sees them, and no one else can fix them for you.

Going forward---if you want to have someone actually look at your tax return before you file it then spend extra money and use the version called TurboTax Live.  That way you can get live help and a review of your return before you file it.  You might want to consider that for your 2020 return.
