People who mailed their tax returns are facing a long wait.

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continueThe IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed  once processing centers are able to reopen.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

State returns have to be mailed to the state.

My Question to Turbo Tax is that you have my records of my 2018 tax being done? Correct??

@Cookie2874 We need to know what you did to file a 2018 return.  If you used the current online program that was a really big mistake.  The online program is only for 2019.  What program did you use to prepare that 2018 return--and how did you file it?

The only way you could have done that correctly would have been to use desktop 2018 software and then you had to print, sign and mail 2018.  Is that what you did?  If so, the IRS has not been opening mailed returns for several months--they have been piling up in trailers.  They are finally just getting started on opening the huge backlog of mailed returns.  The IRS refund site only shows information for 2019 returns, so you are never going to see anything on there about your 2018 return.

Explain what you did--you might have some mistakes to fix.

The IRS has not been opening the mail for months.  So you need to keep waiting.  I heard they might have just started opening the mail that's been stacking up in trailers.   See this IRS page for the latest information

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

Don't know about your stimulus checks.  Have you been filing a Joint return with your wife?  Some of your SS might be taxable.  The Stimulus should be based on your Joint return.

Does anyone know how to contact the IRS?

I e-filed and received confirmation for my federal taxes over 16 weeks ago (March 11) but the IRS website - Where's My Refund? still says, "We have received your tax return and it is being processed."

Should it be taking this long for e-filing?  I can't find a phone number or phone option that leads to a real person at the IRS.

Waiting is frustrating—refunds are taking longer in many cases.  These are not normal times.  It is not possible for TurboTax to speed up the IRS for you.   They are short staffed; and they are processing millions of tax returns at the same time that they have been burdened with the task of processing millions of stimulus checks.

IRS phone lines supported by customer service representatives for both taxpayers and tax professionals are not staffed at this time. To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

The IRS offices have been closed due to COVID 19; some agents are working from home. The offices are scheduled to be re-opened on July 13, 2020. They are very far behind so it will take a while for them to catch up.

@Dustyjoe26

If you used the IRS non-filer site to get a stimulus check, you will now get a  “duplicate SSN” rejection.  We are seeing people who did not notice or ignored the warning on that site about using it if they would be filing a tax return.

E-file reject R0000-902-01: Taxpayer TIN in the Return Header must not be the same as a TIN of a previously accepted electronic return for the return type and tax period indicated in the tax return.

To resolve the rejection check the following:

  • Review the Social Security Numbers in the return to ensure they match the Social Security Card.
  • If the taxpayer or spouse e-filed their return using a different preparer or software for the current tax year you cannot e-file this tax return for the current tax year.  You must paper file.

Did you happen to use the IRS or TurboTax non-filers website to register for the stimulus payment?  If so, see this TurboTax support FAQ for how to proceed - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/stimulus-how-to-file-your-return-after-getting-reject-r0000-902-01/01/1602609

I had to reinstall my turbo tax 2019 several times due to computer issues.  I am unable to upload my already completed tax return to check on status without receiving error message 190 and it will not allow me to proceed.

@bpearlm

If your .tax2019 File has any state returns in it you need to first download the state program.

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW TAX RETURN)

Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.

See error 190

When will I receive my taxes

New Member

Hi, xmasbaby0,

I printed and mailed my 2018 tax forms in March of 2019 (yes late, but that's not the problem). I can only assume that my paper return is in the paper backlog. I have checked IRS.gov, and 2018 has yet to be processed.

Now, my 2019 e-filed forms (using downloaded desktop TuboTax) are being rejected because my 2018 AGI "doesn't match" the IRS database. (Because 2018 hasn't been processed.) I realize I have the option of printing and mailing 2019, but I don't really want to do that because of how long 2018 is taking to process.

Is there another option? Can I enter "0" for example, or will that turn me into a non-filer for 2018? Is there a way to attach an explanation to an e-file? Will anyone read it?

Thanks for any insights you may have.

Yes ... since the 2018 was filed late you need to use a ZERO for the 2018 AGI ... and if that will not go thru then your only other option will be to mail in the 2019 return as well.

Level 15
Jul 17, 2020 6:53:21 PM

Do you mean you mailed 2018 in March 2020 this year?  Then yes enter 0 for the AGI if you didn't file 2018 on time.
