I claimed that I didn’t receive my $1400 stimulus check because I completely forgot due to the circumstances at the time, how do I go back and correct my return?

If you haven't filed you can go back and fix it.  To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus or recovery rebate credit then hit ENTER and there should be a Jump to link

If you are trying to trigger it,

Click on Other Tax Situations at top

Click on Let's get started

Answer some questions then Continue

Then click on Let's keep going

Next screen is for the Third Stimulus, if you qualify

If you have filed the IRS should catch that and adjust line 30 and reduce your refund or send you a bill.

I hoped they would just catch and correct it, but it’s been 3 weeks and I still haven’t gotten anything. I’m starting to get worried.

@mnmechler There is no place on a 2021 tax return to enter anything about the 2nd EIP payment, so there is nothing for the IRS to "catch" pertaining to that stimulus on your recently filed 2021 return.   The only way to get the 1st and/or 2nd stimulus check is to file a 2020 tax return, or to amend a 2020 tax return if you did not enter the information correctly for 2020 to get the recovery rebate credit for the 1st or 2nd stimulus.

You could only enter information for the 3rd EIP payment on your 2021 return---that is the one for $1400 per person.   Did you have that one on line 30 of your 2021 return?

I’m talking about the $1400 one, I didn’t know there were 3 stimulus checked because I only received the $600 and $1400.
When I claimed I didn’t receive the $1400, it added a $1400 credit to my tax return amount. So I’m just trying to figure out when I will get my tax return with this type of error.

@mnmechler If you already received the $1400 but answered incorrectly on your 2021 return it will delay your refund, but we cannot tell you how long the delay will be.  The IRS will catch the mistake and take $1400 away from your refund.   You will just have to watch the IRS refund site for information.  TurboTax does not get any updates.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Yeah I’ve been tracking it daily. As long as they catch the mistake! I wasn’t sure if that would cause problems. I’ll just keep waiting. Thank you!

@Rsm12911 First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

OR——if you filed by mail, expect a long wait.

It is taking the very backlogged IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns.   Until a human opens your envelope and enters the data into the system, nothing will even show up on the refund site, so you will have to be very patient.

As for being charged by TurboTax---you must have upgraded to a paid version by entering something not supported by the Free Edition.   Sorry you did not ask about it BEFORE you filed.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez   If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version and if you are watching the screens carefully you are alerted to the upgrade.

When you chose to “start”  in the Free Edition —

Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only”   If you click that link it brings up this information:

You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

Situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3

Did you choose to have TT fees deducted from your Federal refund?  (Remember that if you did that, you also agreed to an extra refund processing fee of $39.99 or $44.99 in CA)
