If you filed your 2020 income tax return and entered that you did not get your second stimulus check, you may have to amend your income tax return.

  • The IRS has announced that they will begin accepting and processing 2020 individual tax returns on February 12, 2021.

If your return gets rejected, you'll be able to add the stimulus payment and submit the corrected return.

If your return gets accepted:

  • The IRS may correct your return and remove the stimulus payment in which case you don't have to amend your return.
  • If the IRS does not correct your return to remove the stimulus payment, you'll have to amend your income tax return.
  • NOTE: At this time, you're not able to amend a 2020 income tax return. Check the forms availability to see the date you'll be able to amend.

Put it into some bitcoins until they ask about it perhaps

Wait until you receive your refund -- the IRS might make a correction automatically. Please see IRS Recovery Rebate Credit Q D2 What happens if I claim the incorrect amount? for additional information.

If your refund does contain the stimulus payment you will need to amend your return and send the funds back to the IRS.   Please see the instructions contained in these TurboTax Help articles to amend your return:

So for 2021 taxes, I accidentally claimed not receiving my 3rd stimulus of 1400 because when I logged into my bank app I could not find it, but then went into the bank and they found it which stinks… my original return was 2984 with the 1400 recovery rebate credit (claimed the rebate by honest mistake), but now the gov’t amended it and says amount of my refund is 0$. What happened to my 1584??? I’m wondering if this is just a stepping stone to them calculating what my actually return should be… shouldn’t be $0 :(

Please clarify - Did it say your refund was $0 or your Recovery Rebate was $0?    If it says your Recovery Rebate is zero, that is fine because it should be zero since you already received it.    They are probably still processing your return and letting you know they have adjusted your recovery rebate to zero.

Also, check Where's My Refund to see if it has any updated information.

Recovery Rebate Credit - it appears the IRS correctly adjusted this to zero.

Nope it says my new return is $0. 2984 went down to 0$ but should have just been 2984-1400 since the 2984 amount was with the added 1400.

We cannot see your tax return.  However, here is how I assess the IRS statements that you posted.

The Social Security number of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent was missing or incomplete.

The last name of one or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent does not match our records.

One or more individuals claimed as a qualifying dependent exceeds the age limit.

A dependent is disallowed as a qualifying child.

Tests to be a Qualifying Child

  1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half- brother, half- sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them.
  2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), (b) under age 24 at the end of the year, a student, and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), or (c) any age if permanently and totally disabled.
  3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year.
  4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year.
  5. The child must not be filing a joint return for the year (unless that joint return is filed only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid).

Your adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000.

After a qualifying dependent was removed from the tax return, I suspect that you no longer qualified as Head of Household.

The $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit was not issued because you had already received the third stimulus check.

I would wait until you can either access your transcript or receive a letter from the IRS.  It's difficult to wait, but until you know exactly how they changed the tax return you really cannot amend it. And you may not need to amend it.

If you get the correct refund after the $1,400 is removed there is nothing to do.  If the IRS does not release the balance of your refund, then you can do an amended tax return to correct the error.

This has been an unprecedented two tax seasons with all the changes taking place before, during and after.  It's challenging to everyone and that includes the IRS.

Please update here when you have more details and one of our tax experts will help.

I did the same thing.  Did you resolve the situation because contacting the IRS is impossible.

@yinshi22 Do not amend.   You just have to wait for the IRS to fix your mistake.   By answering incorrectly about the stimulus amount you received you put an amount on line 30 of your Form 1040.   The IRS checks that line.  They know how much they sent to you.   They will reduce your refund by that amount.   This will delay your refund so expect a wait.

Since it was a mistake they should correct it. They just deducted it from my expected return and now I owe them. It doesn't make sense.

@yinshi22 What does not make sense?   If you received the $1400 already last year and then on your tax return said no you did not receive it, you put it on line 30 of your Form 1040 again--like you were trying to get it again.   You cannot get the $1400 twice --- so when the IRS sees that you received it already, it is removed from the amount of your refund.

I wasn't trying to deceive them. It's the wording that leads to misunderstanding. How are stimulus and Recovery Rebate Credit the same? The credit you pay back and stimulus is tax-free. So if they had it on record that I received $1,400, why would they add it to line 30 and deduct it? Isn't that their job to correct it, not penalize you as if you received it twice. It appears that I'm not the only one who has made this mistake. I just entered basic that what was on my W-2. Turbo tax did the rest.

The stimulus checks were paid in advance for a credit that you can receive on your 2021 tax return.   Stimulus and EIP, and recovery rebate credit all refer to the same money.   You cannot get the $1400 twice.   Sorry.   If you misunderstood the questions and put it on your tax return again, you were trying to get the credit for money you already received.  Please check your online IRS account to see when the IRS says you got your $1400.

Did you ever get this resolved?  I filed in Feb of this year and also clicked did not receive 3rd stimulus although later I realized I did (oops) 6 months later I still have not gotten my refund even though this other person in the thread said to just wait.  I still cannot get in contact with the IRS.

Should we still be waiting 6 months after filing?  I still am waiting for my refund

@NoRefundBigSad Lots of people are still waiting for federal refunds, especially if they filed by mail.  There is a backlog of nearly 9 million unprocessed federal tax returns.  Returns are taking six to nine months (or more) to be processed.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2724106-my-return-is-accepted-but-still-not-approved-is-there-a-problem-should-i-be-worried

OR——if you filed by mail, expect a long wait.   It is taking the very backlogged IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns.   Until a human opens your envelope and enters the data into the system, nothing will even show up on the refund site, so you will have to be very patient.

I still have the same message which is Our changes decreased the amount of your refund to $0.00. A notice that explains the changes to your tax return was mailed on March 7, 2022  I was owed a 1397 refund but the stimulus was 1400, I got a notice saying I owed 3 dollars which is the difference between the two numbers.  I guess I'll just wait longer or try to make an appointment at the local IRS office.  I'm assuming I should still get this money correct?

@NoRefundBigSad

If your refund is short $1,400 then that is because you said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment and the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.

Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account

If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $1,400 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-payment-issued-but-lost-stolen-destroyed-or-not-received

Yeah I definitely got it, I checked later when I had gotten my state refund but not federal and then realized that I had done.  So now I guess I wait in queue for it to be resolved?  Or will it be?  I definitely am entitled to my refund of 1397 but I feel like since I said no i didnt get my 3rd stim check that they are thinking they owe me the 1400 but are taking it out of my refund and in turn I owe 3 dollars but I have not gotten any of either.  It doesn't help that they have the phones turned off at the IRS after this long and still cannot get ahold of anyone

@NoRefundBigSad Look at your Form 1040.   If you have $1400 on line 30, and your refund as shown on line 35a is $1397-----you are not getting a refund.   You cannot get that $1400 twice----and if you put $1400 on line 30, you tried (accidentally) to get the $1400 again.   You may eventually hear from the IRS asking you to pay $3.
