  1. Open your return in TurboTax.
  2. Click the File tab, then Continue.
  3. On the next screen, E-file Your Federal Return for FREE, select the option File by mail near the bottom of your screen. Click Continue.
  4. On the following screen, select which return(s) you want to print for mailing (federal and/or state).
  5. Continue following the on-screen instructions until you get to the Print Tax Return For Mailing screen.
    • On this screen, click Print Returns to Mail.
    • Then click Preview Print Copy in the pop-up window.
  6. Wait for TurboTax to generate your return in Adobe Reader.
  7. Once your return has opened in Adobe Reader, click the "printer" icon near the top to print.
  8. When finished, click Continue in TurboTax and follow any additional on-screen instructions.

The first page in your printout package will be the File by Mail Instructions, which will provide the mailing address and what forms, if any, you need to include.

Important: To prevent identity theft, we recommend that you mail your return from a post office or give it directly to your mail carrier.

I selected the print to mail option originally and the state forms printed with the words e-file only do not mail. Now the print to mail option is not available at all.

The option you mentioned was not available for 2019 filing.

I don't want to pay $50 for a $22 refund.  But I have no where to print the State return.  Please help

When I go through the process, it does take me to print returns.  I was able to print the federal return, but the state return form is nowhere to be found.  Only the file by mail instructions page.  I called TT to find out why but connected to a computer assistant telling me that I must upgrade to get an answer.  Is this how TT gets you to spend money?  I rather for TT to tell me that the service is not free than being deceived.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2019 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

Thank you for your quick reply.  I am making progress.  I followed your instructions and got to the page offering 3 print options. 1) Just my return 2) Include government worksheets 3) Include government and TT worksheets.

When I click the options 1 and 2, only the summary page 1 of 1 appears.  When I click the option 3, only the government worksheets appear.  What am I doing wrong?

That should have worked and given you both the Federal and State tax return to include all the worksheets.

Have you filed the 2019 federal tax return and if so has the federal tax return been accepted by the IRS?

I was able to download state tax return forms by the way you described but they say for e-file only do not mail. How do I change the state tax option to mail? I have set federal to mail and still my state is stuck at e-file only.

This does not work.. Step 1 requires payment for federal AND state, but I do not want to pay to file state. I want to print it out and mail it in like Turbo Tax used to allow me to do. Your directions appear to only work if you are getting a refund.

@Penchant There is no fee to e-file your return. The fee is for the software to prepare your State return and or Federal. So you would be charged for your state regardless if you file by mail or e-file. You would have to pay your TurboTax fees to be able to print Federal or State returns out.

@Hector79 Are you using online software?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online/00/26258

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and are mailed to different addresses.

How do I "open my return in Turbo Tax?"

All I find is a way to go through the process page by page. I just bought this. I just need to print my state return. Can't get to it

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

@Brown1963sugar

Depending on what TurboTax product you used, you will follow that particular FAQ link provided below to print and mail your return. Directions will be included on what forms need to be printed and mailed in:

Using the desktop version, I can't speak for online. I wanted to E-File Federal, and mail in State. After a while, this worked:

E-File Federal, check option to E-File State later. Once Federal is complete, go back to Federal Filing, select mail in forms, click next. It will tell you Federal has already been E-Filed (it has) and then give the option to print and file your state forms. In my version, there was no watermark stating you must E-file or anything like that.

What I printed had all necessary forms and two pages of instructions.
