Amending 1040 Steps?

I have to amend my 2020 Personal return using TT Home and Business.  I'm amending because I have a multi-member LLC (wife and I) which I incorrectly filed as a Schedule C last year. (no need to address this issue)

Using TT Business I have created and printed the 1065 return along with the K-1s.  All of this business was performed in my home state.  Additionally, I have S-Corp earnings in my home state and California via a 1120S return/associated K-1s.

I'm ready to Amend my 2020 Personal return (1040) but I must be doing something wrong because I can't seem to get started opening a file.  I select Amend a Filed Return, clicked Amend and found my 2020 1040 return, it tells me 'Your federal tax return is now on this computer.  Lets get your CA form'(Error 190).  I do not need to Amend the CA return since nothing is amended for the S-Corp return?

I also tried to 'Find a Tax File' but nothing came up after I selected my 1040 return?

Any help is appreciated.

Ron

To amend your 2020 return there are a few things you need to know before you can start the amendment process:

  1. To amend your 2020 return, you need to use the same TurboTax account that you used to file your original 2020 return.
    • If you don’t see your 2020 return under Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home page, you might be in the wrong account. Use our account recovery tool to find all of your accounts.
  2. Make sure you really need to amend, and that your 2020 return was accepted in TurboTax Online, TurboTax CD/Download, or paper-filed through the mail. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
  3. You'll need to paper file your amended return since TurboTax doesn't currently support e-filing an amended prior-year return.

When you are ready to amend,

  1. click on this link How to Amend Your Return
  2. Scroll down to the line that starts  When you're ready to amend,. . .
  3. Select the product you are using and then follow the instructions.

How to file an amended tax return with the IRS

That explanation doesn't seem to work for me...for 2020 I purchased the CD version of both Turbotax Home and Business and TurboTax Business.  My online account does not show these purchases.

I have opened the TT Home and Business software and attempted as described earlier to Amend it.

I do have an email stating my return was accepted by the IRS...so that implies it was e-filed right?

Can someone provide more direction on where to go from here?

Before you can amend (which won't be ready until March 17) you need to be able to open your file.

To open your file you need to download the state program.

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW TAX RETURN)

Then go to FILE -Open and find your return.

@VolvoGirl

So to clarify...

- Although I can pull up my 2020 personal return the reason I can't amend it is because TurboTax does not have the software ready for amendments until March 17th?

- Can you also confirm I would not need to load the CA program if I don't need to amend it?

Thanks

You can amend 2020.   The 2021 Amended return won't be ready until later.

Are you able to open your return in the 2020 program?   If you can't open it you might get error 190.  Then you have to download any states you have in your tax return, even if you don't need to amend state.

@VolvoGirl

Here is what I have done:

- Open TT Home and Business 2020 and select "Amend a Filed Return"

- The next popup is 'Amend a Tax Return You Filed This Year '...I select the "Amend" blue button below 'No Files Found' and find/select my 1040 return for 2020.

- After selecting this file a new popup comes up inside the 'Amend a Tax Return You Filed this Year' window which says "Your federal tax return is now on this computer.  Let's get your California state forms next" [Error: 190].

My home state is OK, the Amendment I'm doing is for a business that only operated in OK.  I do have a second business that did do business in CA but I do not need to amend the CA return.  Didn't want to pay for a CA download if it is not required...where do I go from here?

Yes you have to download all the states in your return to open the file.   Didn't you already buy CA originally?   You should be able to download it again or call in and ask if you can't find it using these links.
