1095-a

Hi i filed my 2019 tax returns and realized i forgot to file my 1095-a. How do i go back and file that? I know i need to amend my return but nothing on your site makes sense to make that happen. Thanks

STOP .... you must  WAIT for the IRS to either accept or reject the return.

If rejected you can make the correction and resend the return :

The 1095-A information is entered under Deductions & Credits this year:

  1. Sign in and Continue your return.
  2. Click on Deductions & Credits near the top center of the screen.
  3. Find Medical on the list. If you don't see it, click on See all tax breaks at the bottom.
  4. Click on Show more to the right of Medical
  5. Find Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A) on the short list, click Start on the right.

If it gets accepted you must wait for the IRS notice and then you can follow their instructions ... don't know if they will be the same this year as last...

I’m in the same boat; I also forgot to add form 1095-A. Out of curiosity, what are the old instructions if the IRS accepted the return?
I am confused about this process as I’ve never had to amend a return before and I am dying to know what to expect. Thank you.

In the past they requested the missing forms ... you will need to send the 8962 & 1095-A ... but wait for this year's letter since we do not know if they will change the way they handle it.

Same here, this could change the returning amount?

I got the letter in the mail. It was exactly as you described; they want the copy of the 1095-A and the other form within 20 days of receiving the letter.
for me, I owe them about $600 for the health insurance, so my refund amount went down by $600.
I got back my state taxes regardless of this error on my part.

@kellyjelly18, the best way to find out when your refund will be issued would be to track your refund on www.irs.gov/refunds or call the IRS directly. Please click here for more details and information on how to prepare for a call to the IRS.

I sent my information in on February 24th, 2020, and have not heard anything back from them. I also cannot seem to track my return either, even on the amended site.
No letters in the mail. I am not sure if it’s because of the Coronavirus and it’s impact on the IRS’ ability to send/receive mail.

@Tinydiny All mail seems to be sending and receiving ok. The IRS says to allow 4-8 weeks to process a return after receiving the 1095-A and Form 8962. If the IRS sent you a letter and you sent your form in, this would not be considered a Amended return.

Be sure when checking Where’s My Federal Refund? site that you are entering only your Federal refund amount. This can be found on your Federal form 1040, line 21a. If you paid any fees out of your federal refund, use the refund figure prior to the deduction of he fees. Also if you filed joint, be sure to enter the filers name that appears first on the return. If still no status, it is not unusual for topics and bars to disappear, which usually means the process is moving along.

Thank you for the information. I found on CNN that the IRS is indeed not opening any paper returns or mail sent in last few weeks; it is all being placed in a trailer outside.
I also looked at the Where is My Refund and used the old amount— still nothing was visible.
Hopefully this pandemic does some good and the IRS changes their paper-amending ways and implements a paperless way to fix simple errors.
