Are the fees supposed to come out of your refund?

Whether or not the IRS sends your refund or adjusts your return, Turbo Tax still needs to be paid.   Even if you have a tax due or the IRS reduced your refund so it doesn’t cover the fees.

If the IRS is taking too long to send your refund you still have to pay the fees in time, 36 days after your original estimated refund date.

See What if the IRS reduces your refund or delays it.  See How do you justify debiting my account….

Then when the IRS does send your refund they won't take the fees out again.

And, Why you got charged,

You should have received about 4 emails asking for the fees.  If you don't pay they will debit your account.  You had to agree to it.

We don't know what email you got.   Is it this?

If you chose to pay your TurboTax fees out of your refund, and if your refund has been delayed at the IRS, TurboTax would eventually want to be paid.  They may have sent you an email to either go ahead and pay the fees or else they will debit your bank account.  If that's your issue, here's how that works:

As for your delayed Federal refund, what is displayed at the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool?   Is there any message there?

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

The IRS refund tracker tool normally uses 3 stages:

  • Return received and is being processed.
  • Refund approved.
  • Refund sent and an expected deposit date.

If that IRS tool shows your refund is still being processed, and if it's been longer than the usual 21 days, you can phone the IRS to see if they can tell you anything about the delay.
