he earned $6400 in wages and $1000 as 1099Misc (Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend). Does he need to file his own return? If he doesn't and I claim him as a dependent (I am his guardian), do I need to report his income on my return?

A return must be filed for your grandson because you are not allowed to report his type of income on your tax return. The filing requirements for dependents is shown below. For TurboTax Online you can create a new and separate account for your grandson's return.

  • To add a new TurboTax account for your grandson (e.g., to file his own return while being claimed as your dependent), you must create a separate user ID for him rather than adding him to your own return. Log out of your account, sign up for a new account, and you can reuse your email address for notifications.
  • Be sure to answer the question that he is being claimed as a dependent on another return.

Tax requirements for dependent children are different from those of other taxpayers.

  • A dependent child who has earned more than $15,750 of earned income (tax year 2025) typically needs to file a personal income tax form. Earned income includes wages, tips, salaries, and payment from self-employment.
  • A dependent child who receives more than $1,350 in investment income in 2025 is required to file a tax return. Investment income includes interest and dividend payments.
  • If your child’s investment income consists only of interest and dividends, you can use IRS Form 8814 to include it on your own return and combine it with your own income. Doing this may push you into a higher tax bracket and result in higher income tax than if you prepare a separate return for your child.
