Question

Do I need to amend if numbers remain the same?

For 2020, I was a non-resident alien on J-1 visa. I sent my tax return early (my mistake, this was the first time I was doing taxes in the U.S.) and only after that I received form 1042-S from my bank showing $200 bonus I got in box 2C (Interest: Other). This bonus was exempt from tax. Because of that the numbers in my tax return remain exactly the same. I've tried filling form 1040-X, and the numbers in column A rows 1 to 15 are exactly the same as in column C.

My question is, do I need to file an amended tax return?

If there is no change in your tax liability you don’t have to amend your return.

    Thank you very much!

I asked advice on Sprintax live chat, and was told that I need to amend, otherwise I might receive a penalty.
