Why is TurboTax saying that my w-2 doesn't match the current tax year, even though it clearly does?

Try deleting the W-2 and then re-enter manually to see if this will correct this message.

As long as it is labelled as a 2023 W-2 form...

Picture taking to upload, or even Imports can sometimes go wrong.

Just go through the process to enter the data manually.....can be done in 5 min.

Uhhh, don't you think I would have just done that if that was what I wanted to do? This isn't an answer to the question, it's "well i dunno, just do it manually."

We can't see exactly what you are doing...so we answer based on the best guess as to what you "might" be doing wrong....based on thousands of similar situations.

So...somehow you have to give more details as to the steps you've taken and exactly where it fouls up....then maybe we can help.....or maybe not.

Have already done this multiple times. This is akin to "turn the power off and then turn it back on again"

...........only one more suggestion...then I'm off to take an afternoon walk.

Go back and delete ALL your W-2 forms and start over.

Good luck.

Clear the return and start over -

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2023 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

How was your form W-2 entered into TurboTax?  Did you upload it or type it in yourself?

You can change or delete your W-2 info if you haven't filed your taxes yet.  Sometimes this is necessary if there was an input or upload error, that can't be easily detected.

In TurboTax Online or Desktop:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. From the menu, select Search and type-in W-2.
  3. Select the Jump to link in the search results.
  4. On the Your W-2 info so far screen, select Edit next to the W-2 you want to change.
  5. Select the trash can Delete icon to delete the W-2.

In the TurboTax mobile app:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Select Wages & Income.
  3. Select Review/Edit.
  4. Select Job (W-2).
  5. Select Review to edit the W-2.
  6. Select the three-dot icon and select Delete.

You can enter your W-2 forms into TurboTax both manually and via automatic import from over a million employers. An overview of this process can be found in the video provided.

For you to import your W-2 directly from your employer into TurboTax, the following things are required:

  • Your payroll provider needs to be a TurboTax Import Partner.
  • Your W-2 must be available for import (most are ready by February 1).
  • We need the Box 1 amount from your W-2 or the year-to-date (YTD) gross income from your year-end pay stub.
  • In some cases, we may need the Box d Control Number from your W-2, but only if your payroll provider requires it.

Additionally, the instructions from the video can be found by selecting your version of TurboTax here, then following the steps provided.

TurboTax Online

  1. Sign in and continue your return.
  2. Select the magnifying glass, search for W-2 and select the Jump to link.
  3. Select Work on my W-2 and Continue.
    • If you've already entered a W-2 or need to add another one, select Add another W-2.
  4. Enter your Employer Identification Number (EIN) from Box b on your W-2.
    • If your W-2 can be imported, you'll come to the Great news! We can automatically import your W-2 info screen. Answer the questions to complete your import.
    • If TurboTax doesn't recognize your EIN you can use the TurboTax mobile app to snap a photo of your W-2, upload it from your computer, or fill it in yourself.

TurboTax Desktop

  1. Open your return.
  2. Select Search, search for W-2, and select the Jump to link.
    • (On Mac: Select the Federal Taxes tab, then select Wages & Income).
  3. On the Let's get your W-2 info screen, select Work on my W-2 and Continue.
    • If you've already entered a W-2 or need to add another, select Add another W-2.
  4. Enter the 9-digit Employer ID Number from your W-2, and select Continue.
    • If your employer is a TurboTax partner, we'll say Great News! We Can Enter Your W-2 for You and lead you through the steps to import your W-2.
    • If TurboTax doesn't recognize your EIN you can fill in your W-2 info yourself.
