Why does the "payment due" figure on the federal tax return summary not match the amount showing on the payment voucher?

The summary page shows less due than what is showing on the payment voucher.

Do you have a state return also?  That summary confuses people when it nets out the difference between a tax due amount and a refund on the other return.   Look at your actual tax returns carefully and see what they say.  The amount you owe the IRS will be on line 34 of your Form 1040.

Yes, I do have state also. The error is on the federal summary page. The amounts on the state page are correct, but the amounts on the federal page are incorrect. On each page, it shows total tax owed "Total Tax", total tax paid "Total Payments/Credits", and then "Payment Due" which is A-B. The state page has correct info, but the federal page is incorrect. The math is wrong. I've been using TurboTax for years and this is the first time I've seen this.

I have the exact same issue. My 1040 shows total tax due, but then the voucher says I owe a totally different number.  This is what the Return Summary for the Fed tax says:

(Example numbers used)

Total Tax:   $1,859.00 (showing on 1040)

Payment Due:    3,240.00

The payment due amount doesn't match anything on my return. It's like its totally random!

How did this end up playing out for you? I have the same issue this year.

@haibale The amount you owe the IRS is shown on line 37 of your Form 1040.   That should match the 1040V voucher that you have.

@Rxmas ooh i think i might have a problem then. The numbers don't match. Searching through this community, it looks like a common occurrence that the numbers don't match.

do you know what I can do to get that corrected?

@haibale So you are saying that the amount on your 1040

V

does not match line 37 of your Form 1040?     You are not looking at the 1040ES vouchers by mistake?

@xmasbaby0 Sorry! I was looking at the 1040-ES voucher. My return doesn't have a 1040-V form. Could that be because I opted for them to withdraw it directly from my bank account?

@haibale If you chose to use direct debit to pay your federal tax that is why you do not have a 1040V.

Those 1040ES vouchers are optional to use if you want to make estimated quarterly payments during 2023 to avoid a big tax bill or underpayment penalty at tax time next year.  You do not have to use them--it is your choice.

do you know if there's anywhere on my tax return to confirm my choice for direct debit?
