Sometimes people pay with their refund but then the funds are taken due to debt, or they end up without enough in their refund to pay their TurboTax fees and the $40 or $45 charge to pay with refund.   When that happens then their credit card or bank account is charged for the fees.  If you have sufficient funds in your refund, the fees will be deducted from that.  If something happens and you can end up paying with your refund, then your credit card or bank account will be charged for the preparation fees and there will be no pay with refund charges deducted.

There are several situations where you won't be able to use the Pay With My Refund service, including:

  • You're filing a paper return
  • You don't have a federal refund
  • Your federal refund isn't enough to cover the fees
  • You're filing with a foreign address
  • Form 8888 is in your return
  • You already used the service when you initially e-filed your federal return
  • You already filed your federal return and are now only filing your state return

If you select Pay with My Refund to pay your TurboTax fees, there’s an additional $40 processing fee charged by the third-party bank that handles the transaction.

Once your e-filed return is in pending or accepted status, it's too late to remove Pay with My Refund. But if your return is rejected, you have another opportunity to remove Pay with My Refund.

If your e-file return isn't pending or accepted, here's how to change your payment method and remove refund processing fees before you e-file:
