Turbotax said my federal return was accepted but 2 months later I still have not been approved by the IRS. Why should I pay Turbotax when there is clearly a mistake on my return

The fact that it is taking the IRS longer than 21 days to process your return does not mean TurboTax made a mistake.   You do not get a refund from TT because it takes the IRS longer than you expected for your federal refund to be issued.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  “21 days”  is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2023 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

No, a delayed refund doesn't mean there's a mistake on your return. First, check the IRS Where's My Refund? site to get the most updated status of your 2023 refund.

The IRS is taking more than 21 days (and up to 90 to 120 days), to issue refunds for tax returns with the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

Since it's been more than 21 days since you e-filed, you can call the IRS to see if there's something they want from you to speed up your refund.

Call the IRS using these numbers:

  • For individuals: 800-829-1040
  • For businesses: 800-829-4933
  • For those with hearing impairments: 800-829-4059

Once the IRS has accepted your return, TurboTax can’t provide updates on where your refund is at.

Turbo Tax already took their fees from my bank account when I have not yet received my refund. This caused me difficulties with my bank. If there were issues with my return- why didn't Turbo Tax tell me?
