Turbo tax is getting too expensive and not up front about costs and fees making the overall experience incredibly frustrating. Not going to file next year with Turbo tax.

Don't really need a response- just wanted to leave a review.

Turbo tax is the most expensive software on the shelf - I will not use Turbo tax in future and look for an alternative.

I wish i didn't have my information saved from using this service for years. I kept allowing the fee to creep up bc it seems like a hassle to change but at this point its outrageous compared to other services

I agree.  I am (sorrowfully) switching next year.  Its a shame as I would prefer to stick with Turbotax but I can't justify $100 which, ironically, is about what I paid a tax person a few years ago to do my taxes when they were complicated.

Exactly - this is the 8th year I'm using Turbotax and I've always loved it, but the cost is astronomical now compared to what I used to pay for it. This is likely my last year with them, unfortunately. It's just more than I can afford now!

Same -- Used TT for almost a decade and am left with a horrible taste in my mouth.  Get your pricing team talking to your user experience team because a $91 dividend resulting in a $14 drop in refund plus forcing an upgrade to deluxe (~$80) leaves me feeling sick.

Well I used the link thinking I will at least get the share the love friend 20% off, guess what it didn’t show up and they said cause I paid already the discount will not be given. Stupidity, last year was the same  incident with taxact but after I file they were able to fix my discount. So I highly suggest not   Intuition turbo tax

I thought I give turbo tax a try, well I’m not sticking to them

Definitely my last year using Turbo Tax. The price has been steadily creeping up over the years. Also very misleading. Gives you one price..... then the "plus fees." How about list the other fees before I have added all of my info. Been doing my taxes with them since 2011. Time to go.

Agree- there is no reason to pay over $100 to file taxes!!

I’ve noticed the same thing. Only this year it seems to have gone up a lot. When I looked at the discounted price, it was an insult saving $10 when it looks like it went up $20-30 and thats not counting the high cost for extra but needed filings.

I’ve also used the product for a long time but if this is their idea of customer loyalty, i’m going to look for a more reasonable alternative.

Not sure where you are seeing the "increase" ... if you buy during the discount period the price was $39.99 in 2018 and $40 in 2019 ... I see a ONE PENNY change in price ...

If you are eligible you can use the TurboTax Free File Program which is free to file both a federal and state tax return.  The Free File Program edition is a full featured personal tax program and on a separate website from the TurboTax online editions.

To qualify for free 2019 federal and state tax returns with the Free File Program, you'll need to meet at least one of these requirements:

  • A maximum 2019 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $36,000; or
  • You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); or
  • You served as active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a maximum 2019 AGI of $69,000 (you'll also need a military-issued W-2).

@rossmon

Now if you choose to use the Downloaded version you can use Basic if you do NOT need to file a state and the Deluxe or better if you do need a state ... and since any of the downloaded versions can handle all tax forms/situations it is a better deal then the higher priced Online versions ...

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

AND if you shop around you can find the CD or Download at a nice discount from a reputable reseller like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Office Depot, etc.

Below, is what i get when clicking on a preorder link from a few weeks ago!              I use premier w/rental. $110 is about $30-$40 more than i paid last year without a discount at Costco.  Plus, I still had to pay an extra fee to efile both fed and state!        E file services should be bundled.            Yes, its a great product, thats why I use it and recommend it all the time. I’m a retired IT Engineer with old clients always asking for advice! At 71yo, I still have to work for some, just to have pocket money! Our rental income just means that as retirees, we can still live in our California home! Perhaps there should be an additional discount for retirees! Its easy to tell on a return! The partial screenshot below shows $10 off of $110! A fast internet search shows tax apps for my exact needs from industry names that start at less than half the price, much less from new companies that I can try.

If you buy the Desktop CD/Download program the federal efile is free.  State is only 19.99 to efile (went up to 24.99 on March 1) and state is free to print and mail.

But if you want to have the state efile fee deducted from your federal refund there is an extra 39.99 Refund Processing Service charge (44.99 in California).  Or you can pay upfront with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.

This will be my last year filing with turbo tax as well, I have used them for as long as I can remember.. To file with taxslayer this year it would of cost 47 plus two states at 27 a piece. So half of what I am paying with turbotax.

Sadly the fees are not a secret ... they are presented to you all the way and if you did not want to pay the extra fee for the convenience of having the other fees withheld from the federal refund then pay with a CC instead.

If you have filed :

What did I pay last year for TurboTax?

When you begin your return using the Free Edition, it will be free unless you are required or choose to upgrade.

Only very simple tax returns can be completed using the Free Edition. When you choose to upgrade, TurboTax advises you on the screen how much the upgrade will cost. They may not advise you that there will also be a fee for a state return when you upgrade. Here is a current price listing for each online version: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/

There is also a completely free website if you qualify which is free for federal and state.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.

NOTE:  You will have to log out of  your regular Turbo Tax account and setup a new account with a new username and new password or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.

To qualify for the Free File website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things

AGI $34,000 or less

Active duty military with AGI of $66,000 or less

OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)

In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website.  Click on the bottom Orange button I Qualify Start Now and set up a NEW account or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.

I'm done with the online turbo tax. They want around $90 for both Federal and State. I just ordered both for $39 on Amazon.

You always have the choice to purchase a program from any reliable source ... and the downloaded version is usually more cost effective.  Be aware there is an extra fee to efile the state return however you can always print and mail it for free.

Well in the first place you can't compare Online to the Desktop program.  Pricing structure and features are different.
