Tax Year Prior to 2020: Filing MI State return

So my federal return went through no problem on the first, but I was informed that I would have to wait until the 6th to file my MI State return due to something to do with home heating credit? It’s the first year they gave me that option which did give me some extra income, but I’m confused as to what I do now that it’s the 6th. Will they take care of that state return themselves since I inputted all my info, or do I need to keep an eye out for something in me email and/or on TurboTax?

Once your federal return has been accepted, you can go back into TurboTax and file your MI return.  Follow these steps to e-file your state return once the federal return has been accepted:

  1. Sign back in to your TurboTax account.  You will be on your Tax Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to the 2019 menu towards the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click on the Add a State box at the bottom of the screen.   [Don't worry, we're not really adding a state, this is just a way to re-enter your return since the federal return has been filed and accepted.]
  4. If you not completed your state return, click on the State Taxes tab.  If you have completed your state return, click on the File tab and go through the prompts to file your state return.

How can I access my 2018 AGI? I used TurboTax last year as well but only did the free version

There are a few ways to find your AGI from 2018:

1. Log into your TurboTax account, click on your 2018 return. Click tax tools on the left side of the screen, then click tools. There you will be able to see your forms and find the AGI.

2. If you printed a copy of your return or saved a copy on your computer you can look there as well.

3. If you do not have access to your 2018 return you can request a tax transcript from the IRS which will show you your 2018 AGI. Click here to do so: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Enter the amount of your Michigan refund or tax due last year... where can I find this at?

It would be on line 33 of your Michigan 1040. (MI-1040).

If you filed your MI-1040 using TurboTax last year you can access your prior year returns using the Documents tab in the navigation.

When you sign in, make sure you're using the same TurboTax account (with the same username) as in prior years.

  1. Select Documents from the navigation when it appears.
  2. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the screen to choose the tax year you want and then select Download PDF.

Want to download your customer data including your prior year returns? Sign in to TurboTax and select Intuit Account to access all your data in accordance with our updated privacy policy.

Somewhat related question:

We have Deluxe and are all done with Federal but our Michigan state return won't load...at all.

It keeps going through a "download, saving, getting your state" loop that goes nowhere.

Is this a problem others are seeing? I have no idea how to proceed. Thanks!

This may be an issue with your web browser.  Clear your browsers cookies and cache then reboot your computer.  If this does not solve the issue post a reply for additional help.

Thanks, Leonard. I appreciate that. I tried it but, unfortunately, it didn't work. I went to File and it's not in Remove State but on the Get Another State button it says I've already downloaded Michigan (I click download from there too just in case but it brings me back to the same loop, wherein Start for Michigan goes nowhere, fast).

At a loss here.

Before you add Michigan again, you will need to completely delete the state.

Please call in to TurboTax - click the link for your call-in options - and tell them you were given this message from the TurboTax Employee Experts in Community for the Call Center Team:

  • your program is not updating.
  • This is a known issue.
  • The solution is for the call center pro's to push you
    • first the federal software, and
    • then the state.

Everything will work after the new download. Thank you for your patience.
