I have finished completing my 2019 tax return.  Because I am in a qualified disaster area (Hurricane Michael), my 1099-R distribution for 2019 can not be completed and Turbo Tax can not complete my return and file because of a recent law passed by congress.

Do I need to file an extension?  How long until this is resolved?

TurboTax does ask a question about whether the distribution was a Qualified Disaster Distribution. If that is what you mean by your question, then you can continue with your tax return.

If you would like to file an extension, you can, of course, do that as well.

I received the message that I cannot file yet due to new laws passed by Congress because I received a qualified disaster distribution and that Turbo Tax will tell me when to file.

Does that mean i need to file an extension and wait for more information on this newly passed law? Do I need pay what I owe in taxes?

thank you

That does not sound right at all.   Can you post a screen shot (with NO personal information)?   You definitely need to pay your taxes by tomorrow and may need to file an extension if you can't get this figured out tonight.   It won't hurt anything to file the extension, so you may want to do it anyway.   @maigirlhang

@maigirlhang If you did NOT have a distribution due to a Qualified Disaster -

Click on Forms in the upper right of the desktop program screen.  Go to Forms mode.  Find your Form 1099-R on the left side of the Forms mode screen.  Open the 1099-R.  Scroll down to the Qualified Disaster Distribution Smart Worksheet.  Uncheck the boxes so that the worksheet has no information included whatsoever.

That’s the problem. I DID have a qualified distribution due to Hurricane and I keep receiving a message that Congress recently passed a law and I cannot file yet. There’s no override and my taxes will not transmit.

Did Turbo Tac ever resolve this for you? I cannot transmit without it being resolve. Thank you.

Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.  Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.

Go to this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Why is my refund different than the amount on the tax return I filed? (updated 2/5/2021)

All or part of your refund, including any amount for the Recovery Rebate Credit, may have been used (offset) to pay off past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or other federal nontax debts, such as student loans. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have questions about an offset, contact the agency to which you owe the debt.

We also may have changed your refund amount because we made changes to your tax return. This may include corrections to any incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount. You’ll get a notice explaining the changes. Where’s My Refund? will reflect the reasons for the refund offset when it relates to a change in your tax return.

Tax Topic 203, Refund Offsets for Unpaid Child Support, Certain Federal and State Debts, and Unemployment Compensation Debts has more information about refund offsets.

My taxes should that I was to pay $227.00 and I scheduled that to be paid April1,2021 After I filed the IRS corrected my return to reflect not paying taxes on unemployement income, so now they owe me $621.00! The problem is they took the $227 out on April 1st. When can I expect that to be returned with the $621.?

Sorry that you are having an issue with the IRS.  TurboTax does not issue refunds or Stimulus checks.  TurboTax is a tax preparation platform.  If you have submitted your return to the IRS, then TurboTax is out of the picture.  IRS is forbidden to discuss your information with TurboTax because of privacy laws.

However, you will receive your money credited to the additional refunds when the IRS processes your return.  TurboTax cannot give you a date when the IRS will process your return.  It can take anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks to update. Until the IRS starts processing it on their own, you may not find record of it or the website may say that you have put in incorrect information when tracking your federal refund. As your return moves through the system, the status of it will be updated accordingly. Continue checking the Where’s My Federal Refund?  tool for updates.
