My federal got rejected with Reject Code IND-517-02. So I amended my son's taxes and mark box saying he can be claimed as a dependent. I still can't fill my taxes.

Reject code IND-517 indicates a dependent listed on your return has already been claimed on another return as either the taxpayer or the spouse.

How do I fix my return?

To correct your return:

  1. Check the Social Security Number of the dependent to make sure it has been recorded correctly
  2. If you cannot claim the person as your dependent remove the dependent from the return and e-file again. Go to:
    • Basic Information
    • Dependents/Qualifying Person
    • Check the box "This qualifying child is NOT YOUR DEPENDENT."
    • E-file the return.
  3. If you can claim the person as a dependent on your return
    • Print, sign and mail the return. The IRS will review both returns to make a determination on who should be claiming the person in question. The IRS may ask for documents to prove the person can be claimed as a dependent on your return. The IRS mailing address can be found on the IRS website according to your state.

Even though you have amended your son's return, his Social Security number has already been "used" by the e-file system as primary on another return.  Therefore, you will need to change your filing method to "mail", print the return, sign it, attach copies of W2s or other documents showing any tax withholding and mail it to the address provided on the TurboTax instruction sheet.

I had the same issue as you. I submitted my daughter's taxes and forgot to check the box that says, "someone else can claim you as a dependent". When I submitted my tax return through Turbot Tax e-file it was rejected with code IND-517-02. I amended hers and resubmitted it, it was accepted by IRS. I then resubmitted mine and it was again rejected. I spoke with someone at IRS they said the system doesn't look at any amended returns. She said I could possibly use the IP PIN and resubmit it. I looked back at Turbo Tax (desktop version) and one of the sections/notifications when I was going back to the "help me fix" sections, it said if I still wanted to submit my return through e-file anyway after the rejection, to log into my account at IRS and request an IP PIN. I used this PIN and entered it in the personal "other" section in Turbo Tax. I did that, resubmitted it and both federal and state were accepted. I did not have to mail them. Yay!

I am exactly on the same boat as you were. My son amended his return a week ago. I gave it a week to refile. Still the same rejection. I got me an IP PIN. It still rejected me.  How long since the amendment did IRS accepted your return?

Amending their tax return will not allow you to e-file your tax return, not matter how long you wait.  You will have to print and mail your tax return including him as a dependent on your return.

@Gumpy67 Did you get and IP PIN for yourself or for your daughter or both?

You would get an IP PIN for yourself, so you can Efile.  Here's How to Get an IP PIN.

I got an IP PIN and applied it accordingly. Still rejected. Thanks.

If your return rejected because one of your dependents claimed themselves on their return.  You will need to do 2 things:

  • File an amended return for them
  • You will need to include an IP PIN for them on your return

If you wish to get an IP PIN for your dependent, visit Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN).  Then resubmit your return.

I decided to file by paper. I included a letter

explaining

briefly my situation with my signature. And copies of my W2. I don't want to rush when the deadline is nearer. Thank you, folks and wish me luck!

  • File an amended return for them

    DONE

  • You will need to include an IP PIN for them on your return

    DONE

Thanks also to LeteciaF1. This should work now.

Did you start with Turbo Tax online, then purchase desktop to fix this? I have this situation now and am trying to figure out how to proceed. My child's return has been corrected but I cannot get my returns to be accepted, both federal and state.

@msl111271 Even after amending the tax return, you will not be able to e-file your return since the IRS still has the Social Security number from the filed return in their database.

You can only print and mail your tax return.

Did you get the IP PIN for you and your dependent?  There seems to be some confusion on this.  You seem to be the only person that got this to work by e-file.

I thought I was replying to Gumpy67 but instead it adds my reply to the bottom of the thread with no way of understanding who I was talking to.

@g8crasher let me tell you what I did I got the IP PIN for everybody me, spouse, and dependent. I personally think I just needed IP PIN but for same of peace of mind I included everybody's pin. My Federal return was accepted by the IRS and my dependent amended their return before I submitted mine

So i tried doing just my IP Pin and the IRS rejected it.  Then I added my daughter's IP pin and it was accepted.

I will mail in my return, but I had contacted Turbo Tax and had a case number issued. They told me that once my daughter's return is accepted by the IRS I can efile again. Apparently they don't know what they are talking about.

Just to double check the IP Pin was for yourself not the dependent correct? Just wanted to make sure before I submitted the wrong pin.

@g8crasher So I got the IND-517-02 rejection code. I fixed my return and added the dependent IP Pin and efiled and again it got rejected. Then I went and got myself a IP Pin and added mine to it as well so it had both my Pin and the dependent pin and re-efiled again and this time I got an accepted response. So far so good. Hopefully this helps you.

Thank you, this worked for me also after having my daughter amend her return and waiting for hers to be accepted again. We'll see how it goes.

I have a family of four: mom, dad and two dependent daughters.  One daughter did her taxes right, the other left the 'claim you as a dependent' box unchecked.  Both their returns were accepted, and mine was rejected (because I was last to file).  The feedback above seems to indicate you need at least an IP PIN for both the filer and the dependent who mis-filed to get the return accepted. My question is: will all 4 of us need to get IP PINs to have my family return accepted?

I had the same concern. And nearly the same situation, my wife and I filing jointly and two dependents. One dependent did hers incorrectly. She amended hers without the IP pin. I got an IP pin for only me and not my wife or other child. I was able to E file and got the messages back from state and federal that it was accepted. so far so good.
