No. If you purchase TurboTax CD/Download and it includes a free state tax return download, federal e-file is included but there is an additional fee to e-file state tax return(s) (no additional cost if you file by mail). It's crazy that Intuit is nickle and diming customers, even those that bought the "deluxe" product. Such a scummy company. I hope they get their comeuppance down the line.
The fee to e- file the state return went up to 24.99 from 19.99 on March 1, 2020.
PS pretty much every state has the option to e-file for free. I recommend everyone reading this do that and prepare their taxes using the free tax prep software on the IRS's website (which Intuit criminally obfuscates by advertising their own software as free when it is in fact not).
Turbotax deluxe shows 1 state download and 5 federal e files. I am being charged 44.99 for a state download. I purchased the program thru amazon and have a confirmation code. Why am I being charged?
TurboTax Deluxe allows one state download. If you are being charged for that state or it will not allow you to continue with the state, please contact TurboTax Support for a refund code or push of the state return.
Turbotax Deluxe gives you one free state preparation, but it still charges you to e-file said state preparation. Talk about a bait and switch!
The state download is free. Is there an additional charge by Turbo Tax for e-filing state tax return? If so, how much?
For CD/downloaded products, yes, the current state e-file is $24.99. You can avoid the fee by printing and mailing your state return.
From the Intuit site as of November 24, 2020:
"Early e-filing fee $25$20 each. Anticipated fee increase expected in March 2021. Prices are subject to change without notice. E-file fees do not apply to New York state returns. "
For the other states that have a state income tax, when you use desktop software, there is a state e-filing fee of $19.99 that increases in March to $24.99. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print, sign and mail the state return instead.
The $20 is to E-file State Return however, Print & Mail the Return with no charge.
The state efile fee goes up from $20 to $25 on March 1 every year so try to file state before then. And be careful and watch the screens. If you have the fee deducted from your federal refund there is an EXTRA $40 Pay with Refund service charge so pay with a credit card.
But how do you get to pay the $25 with credit card?
The software does not ask for credit card info. It then comes back with an error code 567810 ("your payment did not go through")
The following article will show you the steps to canceling Refund Processing and then pay with your credit card.
I have just finished up with my filing and the fee to e-file in California is $250!?!
My god. That is enough to make me report to the BBB. I am stunned.
Obviously that's a typo on the screen. It should say $25. It has been reported before. I guess they haven't fixed it yet. Have you updated recently?
If you're on a PC, open TurboTax and select Check for Updates from the Online menu near the top. On a Mac, simply quit and reopen TurboTax. If there are any updates, you'll be prompted to download them.
How to update the CD/Download Desktop program

Also......In the Desktop program it is not one state efile but 1 free state PROGRAM download to prepare unlimited returns in that state. Then each state efile (including the first one) is $20 (goes up to 25 on March 1). Or you can print and mail state for free.
That is a helluva typo. I just updated this morning before I finished filing so I guess they did not change it yet.
Wow $45 additional for the state download IF you didnt purchase the version with state tax included AND a $25 state Efile fee. This is very confusing, disappointing and pricy to what you have already paid for the software
I see the current State e-file charge is $25. This charge can be avoided by printing and mailing the state return and I understand that but when I print it out to mail all the boxes for driver's license info are XXX out. How can I file that form with that information missing and unable to correct due to this marking?
You do not need drivers license information to file by mail. It is not even required for federal e-filing. It only adds some security but the IRS does not require it. Nor do the states require a drivers license or state ID to file by mail...
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
