If im late filing how do i know what the cost is when it gives a total and it can't be taking out of my federal return?

if you are due a refund, there is no 'cost'.  The IRS has been pleased to use your money interest free!

 

if you owe, there should be a penalty on Line 38 of Form 1040.  That is an estimate only and the IRS will bill you separately if there is additional owed. 

Look at your Form 1040.   If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.   Your refund is on line 35a.   If you owe tax to the IRS, it is shown on line 37.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

 

 

If your refund is too small to pay your TurboTax fees then you have to pay your fees with a credit card before you can file.
