You have to be using the 2024 TurboTax online editions and entering some information for the links on the left side of the online program screen to be displayed.

Under the Federal link is the Other Tax Situations link -

It's located in the 3rd box over called PERSONAL and the 3rd box over called other tax situations.

@daviswhit It would have been helpful if you mentioned that you are using the TurboTax desktop editions so the correct answer could be given.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  1. Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  2. Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Subtab Other Tax Situations
  4. Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  5. Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  1. Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  2. Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  3. In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  4. Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  5. In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Turbo tax only allows for a 5 digit PIN. The government PIN is 6 digits --- what do I need to do. The IRS has already rejected my return for the PIN. Also my wife's PIN is only 5 digits the same one we have used for years

The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Here's how you can fix a reject:

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.

Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.

Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Additional reject instruction here.

Open Turbotax & click on the "Federal Taxes" tab near the top of the page. Next, click "Other Tax Situations" and scroll down to "Other Return Info".  On the Identity protection PIN line, click "Update". Answer YES to the question did you receive an IP pin. Next, add your IP pin across from your name. Done!

Re:  click on Federal.  I am using the  Mac version of TurboTax and nowhere is the a tab labeled Federal.  The tabs always start with Personal.  So this answer is not useful to me at all.

Federal is the tax right next to personal.
