If your federal return was rejected by the IRS using TurboTax e-file option, you can file through another company if you did not correct it and refile. But first, it is advisable to closely review the reason code in the email you received from us. If you correct the tax return you can refile in most instances through TurboTax and not have to go another provider.

Also, if you have already filed through the other company then don't refile with TurboTax.
Yes, you may get rejected by the IRS through the other provider if you haven't correct the issue for the rejection.

IF I GOT REJECTED ON TURBOTAX BECAUSE IT SAYS MY BIRTHDATE IS WRONG BUT ITS NOT AND NEITHER ANYTHING ELSE IS WRONG, IVE GONE OVER IT MULTIPLE TIMES, AND I CANT GET AHOLD OF SSA OR IRS TO SEE IF THEY HAVE MY BIRTHDAY INCORRECT. CAN I REFILE THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE ?

@Fatimar236 ,  (a) the rejection does not come from TurboTax  but from the taxing authority  ( IRS or the State );

(b) if you check and find that everything is correct, then only option is to file by mail -- this will mean a human will get involved  and  may solve the problem;  (c) IRS  uses SSA file to check name , SSN and Birthdate and sometimes the SSA file is wrong ( for whatever reason ).   If the error persists  then you may have to go visit the SSA local office and they can give  you a letter certifying your  birth date, name and SSN -- you may have to send this  to the IRS to update their records --- that is  worst case scenario -- generally getting human intervention may resolve the issue.

Hope this helsp

Yes you will still be charged if you are using a paid version to file. If you are rejected you can correct the rejection and re-file your return.

Why did I get a phone call from intuit saying my federal return was rejected, yet I already received an email and text saying they were approved? And they still say approved on the website?

Because if you submitted your tax return here, they were pending until the IRS started accepting.   But then you also filed somewhere else and that return was accepted before the one you submitted on TurboTax.   Since your return was already accepted somewhere else, the one you completed here was rejected.   You can only file 1 tax return per year.   Once your social security number has been accepted on a tax return, any future returns with your social security number on them will be rejected.   @hlb8734

You can ignore the rejection notice if your tax return was accepted through another e-file service.

I didn’t file through anyone but turbo tax. I am just replying to the thread because I can’t get any explanation. I just don’t understand why it says accepted on TurboTax yet I got a call saying it was rejected also. IRS still says pending not approved. I have to do an amendment anyway I just need to know if it was accepted or rejected to know if I can fix it and resend or amend after the fact. It’s just misleading and confusing. I’ll try and go by the IRS website not TurboTax I guess.

@hlb8734 TurboTax does not call people unless you asked us to call you. There are scammers that know millions of people use TurboTax. The best method to know what is happening is the IRS at Where's My Refund.

The IRS will reject or accept a return within 48 hours. If your return does reject, you can correct the situation and not have to file an amended return. If the IRS does accept, here is how to file an amended.

Once your return is accepted and the finances are settled, you can file an amended return.

This is a common issue this year for some reason. My aunt and two of my nieces are getting the same rejection notices when filing with turbo tax. The code always mentions that it is the wrong AGI even thought he correct numbers are being entered and for one niece, this is her first file ever so that should definitely not be an issue. Mine was accepted but for some reason is on hold with the irs. This year has been incredibly frustrating. We even called in an an agent said my aunts was finally fixed only to have it reverse to rejected again.

That is ridiculous because clearly nearly everyone is having issues this year.

I will suggest you to print out your tax forms and paper file to the IRS.  To see explanations, click here:

Correct AGI got rejected

The AGI is calculated as follows:

  • It is equal to the total income you report that’s subject to income tax—such as earnings from your job, self-employment, dividends and interest from a bank account—minus specific deductions, or “adjustments” that you’re eligible to take.
  • Your AGI is calculated before you take the standard or itemized deductions —which you report in later sections of the return.

I did not file Turbo Tax for 2019; I mailed my return to the FEDS.  Is this the reason that my AGI was not accepted??  I know what I listed for the AGI was 100% correct.

You can check with the social security administration.  Their information database is where IRS gets a lot of information for their database.

There have been a lot of problems entering the correct AGI to match the IRS database this year.  A lot of taxpayers have had their prior year agi reject when they knew it was correct.

Here are some suggestions from IRS:

Special Instructions to Validate Your 2020 Electronic Tax Return

If your 2019 tax return has not yet been processed, enter $0 (zero dollars) for your prior year adjusted gross income (AGI).

If you used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool in 2020 to register for an Economic Impact Payment in 2020, enter $1 as your prior year AGI. For more information, see Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit if you aren’t required to file a tax return.

When self-preparing your taxes and filing electronically, you must sign and validate your electronic tax return by entering your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or your prior-year Self-Select PIN.

Generally, tax software automatically enters the information for returning customers. If you are using a software product for the first time, you may have to enter the information yourself.

There are several ways to find your prior-year AGI:

Preferred Method

You should always retain a copy of your tax return.

  • On your 2019 tax return, your AGI is on line 8b of the Form 1040.
  • If you used a paid preparer last year, you might obtain a copy of last year’s tax return from that preparer.
  • If you are using the same tax preparation software that you used last year, that software will likely have your prior-year tax return for you to access.
  • If you’re not using the same tax preparation software as last year, you may be able to access your prior-year software and view an electronic copy of your prior-year return.
  • If you are a first-time filer over the age of 16 enter zero as your AGI.
  • If you have an Identity Protection (IP) PIN (via a CP01A or the Get an IP PIN Tool), you should enter it when prompted by your software. It will serve to verify your identity, instead of your prior-year AGI or prior-year Self Select PIN. Starting mid-January 2021, you can opt into the IP PIN program through the online tool.

So if my return was rejected 3xs thru turbo, due to your mistake, and I file and am accepted somewhere else, turbo tax is still going to charge me?

If your return was rejected through TurboTax, it means something on the return you attempted to file through TurboTax did not match what is on file with the SSA.   You pay before you submit your returns.   We cannot guarantee the IRS will accept your return as there are times when things don't match.   If you were able to successfully e-file elsewhere, then that return contained information that did match the SSA data and is different than what is on your TurboTax return.   You can print out the return and compare it side by side to the return you filed to see what was different.    But the fee is for preparing the return.       @jamimarie

You didn't really answer whether or not the fee paid by Turbo Tax will be refunded or not...

I keep getting rejected by the irs. The AGI is what turbotax has on file since most of the information was already there because I used them last year. What can I do?
