I get a generic "TurboTax - Error Looks like we've run into an error. We're sorry but need to close TurboTax." opening 2024 desktop. Is there someone I can call?

I just installed the 2024 desktop PC deluxe TurboTax. I logged in and the app closed out. I re-opened and it said it could not connect to the internet even though I was connected. I closed and tried again and got this generic message. I restarted my computer and tried again and got the same message. I uninstalled and re-installed the app and got the same message. Is there someone I can call to talk through this with?

Here's some things to try in Troubleshooting TurboTax Desktop Issues.

As some users have already suggested, there can be a variety of fixes for this, including those in the above link.

  • Turn off all anti-virus (including modem)
  • Make a new Windows account and run TurboTax from that account
  • Download Visual C++

I found another similar post and they said they needed to log into their TurboTax account before downloading the software. I uninstalled TurboTax today again, logged in to my account, then downloaded it again. Now it is working for me. No idea why that was needed.

There was a known issue yesterday on 1-10-2025 that has now been resolved.

Are we sure this is fixed?  I'm seeing a lot of the same issue, and I've still not been able to activate.

It's not fixed. I ordered my TT Deluxe from Amazon and managed to enter my activation key at TT to get the download for 2024. I've installed it half a dozen times and still get an error meassage telling me there was an error and TT needs to close. My account shows my activation key and the correct version I bought from Amazon. My TT 2023 works just fine, but that doesn't help with 2024 taxes. What give?????

That's exactly my scenario.  Mac or PC?  I've chatted with support and they say they are investigating, but no luck yet.  I think I'm on like year 20 using TurboTax and never had this kind of problem!

The one year I used HR Block (because wife worked at an affiliate and got it free) it was a nightmare.  Of course I waited until the last minute and it wouldn't e-file.  I found that it was putting a 0 instead of blank in a field causing the error.  Ended up having to print the whole thing, LOL.

So, that said - I'm not giving up on TurboTax yet ... but man it's glitchy this year.

I ran into the same problem and found a solution. Make sure you download and install the latest "MS visual C++ redistrutable". My wifes PC has Windows 11 Home and when I tried installing TT to it, TT asked me to install MS C++, I did and it installed and activated perfectly. I then went to my PC that has Windows 11 Pro and installed the latest C++, it to then installed and activated without a problem. I tried everything I could think of and did all of TT's troubleshooting that did not work. For some reason MS doesn't download the latest C++ through Windows update, you need to go to MS and get it. TechPowerUp has an all in one install packeage that updates all the MS C++'s too. Hope this helps?

I'm on a Mac - so not sure if there's an equivalent solution for me.  TT support is still trying to troubleshoot, but no luck yet.

Thanks.  Supports been trying to help over the last several days, but there still appears to an issue with compatibility with my Mac.  I'm running Intel Mac with latest MacOS 15.2

My wife's running a Mac with Apple silicon and on older MacOS (14.5) and it worked fine for her.

No luck for me and we've spent several days troubleshooting.

I have same the same problem. Had no problem installing and using the software, then today when it updated, the problem started. I Spent 4 hours on the phone with customer service and it’s still not fixed. Sounds like there is a bug in their software that they need to fix.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times. Still didn’t work.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

It is very frustrating and I had the same issue. Download and install the latest "MS visual C++ redistrutable". When I installed / repaired the version I was using then I was able to access Turbo Tax again.

TurboTax Deluxe installed just fine initially and I was able to begin using it in January.  This week TTAX began to throw the error "TurboTax - Error Looks like we've run into an error. We're sorry but need to close TurboTax".  I've called support twice and have two different case numbers.  We uninstalled and reinstalled TTAX multiple times, using admin creds, not using admin creds etc.  Still threw the error.  Downloaded a "super patch" at TS direction and applied it.  Did not resolve the issue.  Then the TSR told me this is a known issue with TurboTax deluxe and the dev team is working on fixing it and should have it resolved over the weekend.  I asked how I would be notified when it is resolved, and he said via email.  We shall see.  Since the known issue affects Deluxe only, I asked when customers would be upgraded to a working version such as Premier free of charge.  Didn't get much of a response to that question.  So far, I've spent at least 5 hours trying to get TTAX 2024 working.  In reading this thread the issue seems to have been going on for several weeks, unless that same error message is thrown for a variety of issues.  C'mon Intuit, let's gooooooo.

I am having the same issue. I installed it, started using it, then it wanted to do an update, and now I cant finish my taxes. Reinstalled several times and still get the same issue. Oddly, when reinstalling it never gets to the screen to put in the license again.

Did you ever get this reolved?
