I am recently married and both my spouse and I have existing turbotax accounts. Can we merge them when filing jointly?

No.   TurboTax accounts cannot be merged.

To begin a new joint return on TurboTax:

You will not be able to merge two previous TT account to start your new joint return.  You can transfer ONE of your 2020 returns into a new return, so choose the most complicated one.  The other spouse’s information needs to be entered manually.

When you enter your own information in My Info, you have to answer the question "Were you married?"  If you click the button for Married, then a drop down will appear that asks, "Do you want to file this return together with your spouse?"  Then you choose yes to file a joint return.  You would then enter your spouse's information into My Info.  Whenever you are entering income information there should then be a spot for you and for your spouse's income information.  Income screens will have spots with each spouse’s name—be careful to enter under the correct names.

Going forward -- do not try to change the order of the names on your tax returns.

Best Wishes!

recently married

Were you married as of 12/31/2021?  If you married in 2022, you cannot file a Joint return for 2021.

I'm frustrated with the situation.  My wife's previous tax returns are inaccessible because we have filed jointly using my TurboTax account.  The problem is that her tax returns are held hostage and won't download because the following year's taxes were filed with my TurboTax.  Shame on TurboTax.

Again---

You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2022 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.  You do not have to finish preparing or file the 2022 return---you just have to enter enough information to get the side menu to open up.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.
