Have you paid and/or filed your tax return?

If you have not paid and/or filed your tax return. you may be able Select Tax Tools from the left menu, then Clear & Start Over in a new free tax return.

I have already filed but now realize that it should have been free.  I would like a refund.

There is no place to file a complaint and no refund. When the upgrades happened you were told and approved. by clicking to continue.  If you clicked through without reading the screens that is not a reason for refunding.

The agent that I spoke to on the phone advised me to file a dispute with the credit card company.  I feel like the website is misleading and did not show visibility for the free option.  Is my only option to file a dispute?

Does a misleading website qualify for a refund? There was no option for free service leaving me to believe that it wasn’t available.  I didn’t know that the free option route was hiding.

Millions of people are able to understand the website.

Millions of people are over paying due to a misleading website specifically designed to make you think that you have to use the options which require a fee.  Why do you have to choose the tax tools in left menu in order to switch to the free edition?

If you have not registered, paid or e-filed you can clear and start over in a lower version of the software.

CLEAR AND START OVER

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2586254-how-do-i-clear-and-start-over

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/free-edition.jsp

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez   If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version and if you are watching the screens carefully you are alerted to the upgrade.

When you chose to “start”  in the Free Edition —

Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only”   If you click that link it brings up this information:

You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

Situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3

How does TurboTax make any money?

Customers with more complex tax situations will file with our paid TurboTax products that provide all the additional forms and guidance they need. We also offer additional benefits that go beyond filing your taxes, but they are optional and are not required to file simple taxes for free. We hope that, over time, as our customers with simple returns need more capabilities as their financial situations change (for example owning a home, having a child, managing investments), they have loved our products and services so much that they will choose our paid TurboTax offerings to prepare and file their returns.

Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

Or—if you live in certain states you may be eligible to use the new IRS Direct File

( AZ, CA, FL, MA, NH, NV, NY, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY )

How can I see my TurboTax  fees?

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons     (BEFORE you e-file) :

TurboTax service is TERRIBLE. Full of EXCUSES from the tax experts!!! With this pre-price preview rate of $409, I can get a CPA to amend 2022 tax and file my tax for me in 2023 both State and Federal Taxes.  TurboTax took my paid service fees of $200+ for HORRIBLE guided tax experts in 2022, 3+ days, and almost a week waiting period and an extension of my 2023 tax year, and still couldn't figure out my personal income tax with only TWO 1099-B statements with less than 200 option transactions, a HSA tax form, and TWO W2 statements. TURBOTAX service is getting WORST year over year and over charging their customers!!!

During TAX season, I never get to talk to any TAX EXPERT and I had to file for EXTENSION.

TERRIBLE!!!!!

The more you complain, the more TurboTax slows down its customer service and charges you more. This is the way you treat your customers. I can't sit in silent about this issue and I will let many people know as much as I can.

Good luck.   They took 160 dollars of my tax return when it should’ve been free.    I’m filing with Better Business Bureau and will never use turbo tax again.

You were shown the TurboTax account fees in the File section of the program on Step 1 with the Order Summary.

You could have removed any option shown and you could have also cleared the tax return and started over with a lower priced edition or you could have used another service.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for removing options on your account - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/intuit-account-billing/reduce-fees/L3Kp3...

See this TurboTax support FAQ for clearing the tax return and starting over - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/change-service-level/clear-start-turbota...

What is the Intuit TurboTax controversy?

The Federal Trade Commission has issued an Opinion and Final Order that Intuit Inc., the maker of the popular TurboTax tax filing software, engaged in deceptive advertising in violation of the FTC Act and deceived consumers when it ran ads for “free” tax products and services for which many consumers were ineligible.Jan 22, 2024

If you want to request a refund of what you paid for your TurboTax product, you can request the refund by filling out the online form at this link.

See this blog for more information about who may qualify to file for free using TurboTax. Some promotions were only offered until March 1st.

We at Intuit TurboTax want our users to be completely delighted with their experience using our products and services, and successful in their financial lives and businesses.

Once you file your return, as long as the settings to receive communication from Intuit don’t block it, you will see a pop-up message or receive an email with a survey asking you about your experience. We encourage you to leave your notes and comments there. “Voice of the Customer” notes and comments are read and acted upon.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can also leave feedback at the Final Steps tab:

I paid 79.00 to use the online tax service and get direct deposit. I printed it all out and it was all correct. Then my bank rejected the refund because you put an extra 1 in my account number. The money then went to your internal bank green dot where it was then sent to SBT(?) Where I was charged 30 more dollars for the privilege of them cutting and mailing me a paper check. YOU ARE A BUNCH OF SCAMMERS

What seems to have happened to you was a computer error, not a scam.  If it was a scam it would have happened to many others.  Computers are very reliable, but sometimes an error occurs when the data is transferred over communication lines.  The extra character was probably there although it did not show up in your printout.  Or it was added  in error by the system that transmitted your information.

Agreed with others - you are billed prior to being able to review your tax return and then it’s immediately submitted with errors, causing a rejection or worse a tax return being filed where  the data does not match up with what’s been reported onto 1099 forms, W-2s, and the list goes on.  In my case, I was charged once again for the person that screwed it all up to go back in and fix the return so it’s not rejected.  Users Beware,  a  federal tax filing cost upwards of the $500-$600 range with the state tax filing involved.  The customer service representatives are argumentative and do everything to blame the client.    Second, year customer and it is my last nightmare use of this company.

Where is my refund your holding my funds hostage for almost 3 months now. Keep lying saying the funds is sent out. I contacted cross river bank they are just the account holder they don’t distribute the checks unless are told by turbo tax I want my refund. I paid for a service. I got an Attorny reviewing the case. I will not use turbo tax again or recommend anyone to do so.
