It’s a fairly straightforward procedure.

Please see the TurboTax Help article How do I download a CSV file from Coinbase? for guidance.

Hello Tom,

I was about to upload the steps; I don't see steps 3 & 4. When I click on the investment (1099-B) visit all, I see my downloaded investments except Coinbase. When I click Add and select import from my bank or brokerage, I don't see Coinbase there. When I click on " I'll type it myself I don't see Coinbase there either.

How do I see step 2 and 3. I am using TurboTax Delux. Please help as I want to submit the tax return.

  1. In the Wages and Income section under Investments and Savings (or Investment Income), select Start or Revisit next to Crypto (1099-B)
  2. On the next screen, you may see Did you sell any of these investments in 2021? or Time to kick off your investments!, select either Yes or Okay!
  3. On the We can make this faster screen, select Enter a different way, and then select Cryptocurrency on the following screen
    1. If, instead, you’re asked to select an investment type, select Cryptocurrency
    2. You’ll then see the Get ready to be impressed screen. Select Continue, then select Try another way
  4. Select Upload on the Select your crypto experience screen

The easiest and fastest way to get your crypto transactions into TurboTax is by using the import method. If you’d rather download a CSV file from your crypto service and upload it to TurboTax, here’s how.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax, and open or continue your return
  2. In the Wages and Income section under Investments and Savings (or Investment Income), select Start or Revisit next to Crypto (1099-B)
  3. On the next screen, you may see Did you sell any of these investments in 2021? or Time to kick off your investments!, select either Yes or Okay!
  4. On the We can make this faster screen, select Enter a different way, and then select Cryptocurrency on the following screen
    1. If, instead, you’re asked to select an investment type, select Cryptocurrency
    2. You’ll then see the Get ready to be impressed screen. Select Continue, then select Try another way
  5. Select Upload on the Select your crypto experience screen
  6. On the What’s the name of the crypto service you used screen, select your crypto service from the dropdown menu
  7. After downloading your CSV file from your crypto service, upload it on the Go ahead and upload your crypto CSV file screen
    1. Note: Make sure your file extension is .csv
  8. Review your uploaded crypto information

Just to clarify I am using my computer and installed Tubotax Delux version. I am not using online TurboTax.

So, the question is how do I import Coinbase CSV file in desktop Turbotax? I need steps please.

Also, I didn't make any money, do I still need to report my transactions?

Can anyone please reply to my question ASAP?  Thanks.

Thank you for clarifying.  Crypocurrency transactions are only supported in TurboTax Online and the TurboTax mobile app at this time.

If you can't import the txf or csv file into the Desktop program there might be another way.

You can only import crypto into the Online version.  For Desktop program you can start a free online Premier return to import it then switch and open your return in the Desktop program.  See the last answer by Expert Patricia  here,

OK, so basically, I use free online version and input all my personal and investment information including Coinbase transactions.  At the end I download the file (TXT) and import the txt file into Turbotax and file the tax return. Is that what I need to do?   Can you please confirm? Thanks

No, you can't use the TurboTax free version.  You can use the cryptocurrency import and other features with the TurboTax Online Premier and Self-employed versions, only. However, you won't have to pay for use of the software since you're not going to print or e-file it.

Yes, start a free tax return in TurboTax Premier Online. You don't pay for the return until you file it, so you won't have to pay the Online fee.  Enter (import) your cryptocurrency information in the Crypto section, and then save the .tax file (not PDF).  You can then open the tax file in TurboTax desktop, add the rest of your tax data and file.

The other option would be to file using the Online software and get a refund for the desktop program.

Yes you can use Online Premier for free.  You will download the .tax2021 file to OPEN in the desktop program.  You don't use a txt file or import it.

First save the tax file from Online. You can download the .tax2021 data file without paying for Online and continue in the desktop version

You need to install the program on your computer and move your online return to the Desktop program. How to switch…….

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).
