How come EVERY TIME I open my Turbo Tax to continue working on my return, I get a message for another [profanity] 185MB update? This is RIDICULOUS with this product?

This is absolutely insane. I've never had to deal with anything like this with TurboTax before. I do the updates, it says the updates are successful, and then the next time I open it, BAM, gotta do another friggin' update. What could these updates possibly be doing? Are the tax laws changing by the [profanity deleted] hour?

As I understand it from other posts, MAC turbotax has decided to force updates whenever available, sort of like Windows 10. perhaps their software is buggy.

I have had this same expletive problem for the past five years with TurboTax. I'm pretty expletive sick of it. When are the expletive expletives going to fix this expletive software?

I have the same problem. If I do not download the full 220MG update, it will not access my return. I have never had this problem with the MAC version. What can be done about this.

I'm thinking that TurboTax is resting on its laurels. I've been a loyal customer since they introduced TurboTax. That's something like thirty years or more. Next year, I'll be shopping for something else.

@kvasdbills @litebkt You are posting on year-old thread.  Can you tell specifically what issues you're having?  Thanks!

I had to "update" every time I opened the application this year. And last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. With slow internet, this can take all day. Are updates released every day? This happens months after April 15th as well. The update is in excess of 250Mbytes. I'm running on a Mac with the most recent release of the operating system.

Every year, I've come to this forum and every year I find the same answers. The problem has never been addressed. I DON'T have this issue with ANY other software I own.

Kat, Every time I open TT. it wants to download 220mg of date - the original download I believe. I have it now that it will ask if I want to download and if I skip the download, it does not find my tax return. It basically stops. So, I have to download the whole thing, for an extended amount of time, EVERY TIME, to access my return. I have run TT on a MAC for years and never had this problem. Almost finished, so should not have to go through this ridiculous process too many more times.

@litebkt @kvasdbills I'll share your comments with other SuperUsers and also with TurboTax Moderators.  Hopefully, someone will have some input tomorrow.  I'm not a Mac user so I'm clueless.  But if this issue goes on year-over-year, it should certainly be investigated.  So sorry and thank you for your patience.

Kat, it is only happening on the 2018 version - problem free for all previous years.

Thanks, @kvasdbills.  Looks like @litebkt has the problem each year.  I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this problem today.

See my answer below.    This is almost always due to a local Mac file that has lost it's r/w permissions or has become corrupt.

There have been cases when the re-install does not help.  If that happens then to troubleshoot, switch to (or create) a different User account on the Mac that is an administrator account and install TurboTax in that account.  If there is no problem in the other user account then there is some other basic corruption in the first user account.   That is an issue for Apple support.

ok thanks, I have 2 states and federal downloaded, so think I will finish my return & file, before I have to figure out where/how to get the downloads again, etc.

This is a year old post, but this usually happens when a preference of Applications support file has become damaged or corrupt.   The solution is to do a total uninstall of ALL associated files the  then empty the trash restart the Mac before re-installing.

Corruption could have occurred in the Application or in an associated preference or support file.

The best remedy is to totally uninstall TurboTax and all associate files and then re-install. That will not delete or change any .tax2018 data file that had already been created with the tax data.

To uninstall the application and all associated files need to be deleted and then the application reinstalled. If there was a state then the state must also be reinstalled.

Here is a FAQ for how to uninstall Mac

Empty the trash and restart the Mac.

As stressful as this may be, please refrain from using profanity in this forum.

I did find a TurboTax FAQ that may prove helpful.

I can appreciate how frustrating this program is to use. I rarely curse, but with Turbotax, while I don't swear online, I sure feel like doing so. The program's poorly made for users.

I have TurboTax for Windows and also cannot access my tax files without updating TurboTax.  This is the the first year this is happening.  I want to see my tax files in the TurboTax version I used for the tax return!

I have always been able to open TT after I have filed without changing the underlying program but not with 2018. I don't want any program changes modifying what I filed. This is a new issue and I just want to use the program I purchased the way I purchased it. I should not be required to download an update after I file.  How do I do this?

Contact TurboTax support and speak directly with a TurboTax support agent concerning this situation.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for a contact link and hours of operation -https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number

I just want to be crystal clear. I have had this problem with TurboTax since 2013. Every single year. If I don't get notification that this has been fixed this year, I'm moving to another tax software package. It's rather sad, really because I've been using TurboTax since the first year it was released. I am tired of fighting it.
