Are you filing separately? If not, you need to go back through your Missouri return again because something is not right. If you lived together all year, you should not be seeing that form (unless you are filing separate). Sign in to TurboTax and click on State in the left menu. Then, choose Review/Edit your Missouri return. It may say Go back over your Missouri return. You may need to check over your federal too in case the error is coming from something you indicated on the federal return.
I live in Michigan, we do file separate. I have gone back through state retur. I find no spot that asked if we lived together. On my federal return it did ask that and I stated we did love together.
I see Michigan and Missouri use the same form number. I can't find that field when I try to recreate the situation. Is it possible to indicate that you live together on the form in the explanation area? Another option is to delete the state return and start it over. Sometimes that works. If you do try it, delete the state and then go back through the federal before starting the Michigan return again.
I also live in MI and am married filing separate and it's making me put in an explanation for why we lived apart when we didn't. Also, the form is completely empty and it won't let me edit and add any of the income numbers into the form. I can't search the form within the return and nowhere in the return did I select that we lived apart. It's doing this in both my return and my wife's return and won't let us get past the review stage to file.
I've tried deleting the state return and starting it over but it's still there. There is some sort of bug in your programming that is requiring this form when it isn't needed or won't let you edit the form within the return.
Any update on this?
I am having the same issue. Filing Separately. Live in Michigan.
In the MI interview follow these steps:
1. Click "Edit" for "Credits and Taxes"
2. "Revisit" Homestead Property Credit"
3. Click "Yes" for "Household resources"
4. Click "Yes" for "Do you meet the qualifications?"
5. Continue to answer and select appropriate boxes
6. When you come to page titled "Homestead Property Tax Credit" It asks "Did you live on separate properties?" Answer "NO"
It looks like I’m not able to update the homestead property tax credit page as I’m not eligible as my income is greater than the $60k limit. Any other options to correct this form?
If you are not eligible for the credit and it is giving you a hard time, I would delete the form.
To Delete Form 5049 for TurboTax Online:
I am also having trouble with this process. I am married but are filing separately. We lived together in 2019. I have tried following your steps, but now there isn't a 5049 Form listed to be deleted.
What do you suggest I do next?
Form 5049 is a state specific form. Are you receiving an error regarding this form number? If you are trying to delete the form, it would be listed in the state's forms list.
I am getting the same error. I think TurboTax needs to fix the issue since it is not picking the right options. Can TurboTax create an update and fix this issue?
To explain: My wife and I are full residents in Michigan owning a home. The home and the income does not qualify for the HomeStead. However, for some reason, TurboTax is trying to and it is asking for an explanation why we maintained separate homesteads.
Just a TurboTax issue
TurboTax only calculates this information if you are living separately. I recommend these steps to troubleshoot the prompts you're getting about Household Resources when the credit does not apply in your circumstance:
1. Check your input about Married Filing Separate
From the left menu, select My Info
Make sure that you have answered the questions about Married Filing Separately accurate to your situation
2. TurboTax Online: Go back to Michigan if you want to "untrigger" the questions. This is an optional step. You could go straight to Step 3.
Option 1: You do not need Form 5049
From the left menu, select State

On the Your 2019 Michigan taxes are ready for us to check page, scroll to Credits and taxes and select Edit

I’m a Michigan resident and am experiencing the same problem. This troubleshooting does not take you to the right screen/forma. There is no option to get to form 5049. Can someone please fix this glitch? Otherwise I’ll have to print out the return and edit by hand and send via mail... kind of defeats the purpose of using TurboTax. Pretty disappointing...
Please explain further. You are not getting Form 5049. What about the federal return? Are you okay there?
Either way, please reply in this thread so we can resolve these unexpected results. We are happy to help.
I too reside in MI, married filing separately. The system is not working right. I have done all the steps you say to fix the problem, answered all questions correctly. Can someone PLEASE pretend to be us and run through it to see the system has a glitch? I am very disappointed and may have to use another product if this not fixed.
Dear @KathrynG3 ,
Thanks for your help. I followed your advice with one caveat and it seems to have worked. The caveat is that before I follow your: 'Option 1: You do not need Form 5049', I deleted the Form 5049 manually from my Form view (Top Left Corner).
Again, not sure if it is because they fixed it with the updates (since my question is about 3 weeks old) or your advice combined with deleting the form did the trick.
For other people, I am going to add my situation. I believe this is the same situation people are describing in this specific thread/forum and the solution above worked for me:
- The form 5049 is for Michigan. This is the Form: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/taxes/5049_674639_7.pdf.
- The form indicates: This form is intended to assist you to correctly calculate total household resources for the Homestead Property Tax Credit (MI-1040CR or MI-1040CR-2) or Home Heating Credit (MI-1040CR-7) when married, filing separately or divorced during the tax year.
- My wife and I are married.
- My wife and I are filing together.
- My wife and I own a home in Michigan.
- My wife and I lived in that home for the entire year.
- My wife and I paid for Property Taxes for such home.
- My wife and I do not qualify for any of these credits that is what this form is used for. That is, we do not qualify for the Homestead Property Tax Credit, nor for the Home Heating Credit due to various factors.
- My wife and I are using the latest and updated (as of Mar 24, 2020) TurboTax Not-Online Home & Business 2019 for MacOs.
- My wife and I do not want form 5049 appearing in the preparation of Michigan Taxes since it does not apply to us as indicated above. In addition, TurboTax indicates there is an error in the form since it However, for some reason, TurboTax was trying to and it is asking for an explanation why we maintained separate homesteads.
Since you are still experiencing unexpected results, then it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2019" file that is experiencing this issue. You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
For TurboTax Online:
For TurboTax Desktop:
I'll be able to open TurboTax with your numbers but not your personal information. That may help diagnose the issue.

I have submitted the file, token # 628959. Thank you for your help.
Here is how you can connect with a Tax Expert. We have no ability so see your tax return on this forum.
I am following the steps you lay out in option 2, because I need form 5049. I live in MI filing separately, and need this form to put my income with my spouses. when following your instructions, I get all the way to your point "homestead property tax credit click no", once I click no, it takes me back to the "take a look at Michigan credits and taxes page. It completely skips your last steps of "total household income required click continue, click done with credits and taxes, married filing separate click yes, enter the dates you lived together and click continue, prorate your income on Form 5049 and click continue". I know I need to fill in the 5049 portion with my wifes income, but it won't let me, and I know the system is not showing me the right pages because when my wife did her taxes, it had her fill in my information in hers. I have tried completely deleting EVERYTHING and starting over, but I still can not get these last sets of questions to pop up for me.
I have looked over your return and am getting the same results. But, going through it, I think it is because the property taxes are not showing. In fact, those details are entered in the Federal section.
Even though you will be taking the standard deduction, follow these steps to enter the taxes:
Once this is in place, you should get to the next screen as described.
If you continue to not see Form 1040CR and Form 5049, I would recommend TurboTax CD/Download. It is easier to see the income allocation screens in TurboTax CD/Download.

From the 2019 Michigan MI-1040CR Instructions, page 4:
Thank you for your patience, @Jaredw19. Please post back and let me know the results of entering the property taxes before returning to the State Property Tax Credit section and going through that interview again.
This still seems to be an issue. My wife and I file separately and cannot edit the 5049 form to add our respective incomes. When I try to submit, it wants me to explain why we lived in separate locations when we answer No to this question.
I have tried deleting my whole return and starting over.
I have tried deleting/readding property tax information.
Please fix this issue or allow me to just edit this form, I should not have to download the program to fix.
